EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

About 15 minutes ago I again gave mineral oil, egg, and water w/electrolytes. When I massaged the crop, it was really full and even more squishy, but this could be because I just gave her a bunch of fluid. Her poops are small and watery, no substance to them yet.

A few hours ago I gave her more of the same stuff, but this time I felt her crop beforehand. It went down a little but that’s because the fluids moved through. It hasn’t changed much at all. However, I did see some more poop. It looks like this:

In terms of keeping her alive until you can get to the vet, just having the new fluids move through should help a lot. (Although you might still need the vet to solve the underlying problem, if the crop doesn't improve by the time you can get there.)

Be careful not to give too much oil at a time or daily. I had suggested to give 5 ml daily. That is plenty. If she would happen to vomit up crop contents, the oil could cause problems if she aspirates. Also too much olive oil could cause diarrhea. Hopefully her crop will go down.

Hi,
While we were on vacation for two weeks, one of our hens, Snowpea, started acting sick. She turned out to have an impacted crop that’s gone sour. I tried doing the oil and the massages and it’s been building up for so long (3 weeks now) that it’s not moving through. We were gonna see a vet today to get surgery done but we got a surprise snowstorm and everything’s closed, can’t even go out on the road to get supplies from the store. No 24/7 emergency animal hospitals will take chickens, plus we can’t drive anywhere anyway. She’s emaciated and starving and I don’t know what to give her that will pass through the crop to give her nutrients. I made homemade electrolyte solution (gave her 10ml so far) but not sure if that will suffice. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to keep her alive until we can access a doctor. Also, she’s outside in the coop and it’s cold, so I’m putting her in a warmer area on the side of our house.

Any help is welcome. Thank you so much.
You can do the surgrey yourself

Hi,
So sorry for the late reply, I for some reason stopped getting notifications from this thread and forgot to respond. Unfortunately Snowpea didn’t make it. Due to weather conditions and ice on the road, we couldn’t get her to the vet, as their offices were all closed. There was a practice willing to do the surgery once the roads were safe, but it was $1600, and despite my best efforts to give electrolytes and egg, she was super weak and didn’t look like she would survive the transport or surgery. She died the following night. I could not do surgery myself either, as without proper anesthetic, I’d consider it animal abuse to put the poor thing through even more trauma. Thank you all so much for your efforts to help, and may this be a learning experience for me to diagnose and treat problems like this immediately after I see signs that something is off. Rest In Peace Snowpea, you are and forever will be loved and missed.
