Ikea Chicken Coop. VOTE FOR US!!!

Just voted...13% are for the coop and 26% for the hamster haven. That's just wrong. Looks like the folks at Backyard Hamsters are besting us.

Why Do Chickens Run Around After Head is Cut Off?

Exactly..pain receptors are in the brain. Also, why butcher them because of the cold? They would have been okay.

    What am I doing right?

Quote: Thanks! Owe it all to this site! I have not had them long--since sept. or oct. I figured since this was my first shot I'd have at least one sick or dead bird by now, but all's well. Beginner's luck I guess.

    What am I doing right?

Quote: Thanks..My question was if getting an egg a day during the winter was normal, since I read a lot of threads saying hens slow down in the winter. I do know they slow down when they get older.

    What am I doing right?

This is my first winter with hens. They started laying in the late fall, and haven't let up. I do not give them any more hours of artificial light, yet my brown egg layers lay every day, and my single white layer lays about every other to every three days. I decided not to give them any more...

    Why hatch over getting chicks?

Just curious what the advantage to hatching in an incubator is over buying chicks. Seems like the eggs are more expensive than chicks, including sexed chicks, and the success rate of chicks arriving well seems greater than hatch rates. Again, just curious. I still plan on getting some eggs and...

lots of people having problems with the LG bator.

I just got 2 free LG still-air incubators for free from my neighbor. Never hatched before and I'm looking forward to it. First order of business will be getting fans. Thanks for the info.

Carving a pumpkin tonight...can they eat any of it?

Quote: Garlic? Now on this toxic plants site, which was a link on the chicken treats page, says garlic is toxic. http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html Look under 'A' for "Allium spp." The entry reads: (CHIVES, GARLIC, LEEKS, ONIONS); bulbs, bulblets, flowers, stems; gastrointestinal...

Yogurt everyday for young chickens too much calcium?

Quote: I thought the reason people fed their chickens yogurt is for the good bacteria which is good for their digestive system.

    "Cooping" chickens in new coop

Thanks everyone--I was a little concerned because my coop is only 4X8. It's plenty of room, but a little tight if they had to be locked down for a few days, I think.

    "Cooping" chickens in new coop

When you lock up a new flock in a coop to condition them to come back there to roost, is it okay to let them have access to an attached run too or do they need to be locked inside the coop itself? Thanks in advance.

    Is my quarantine blown?

Thanks Speckled....Well, I took your advice and tried to catch her, but I was unsuccessful. She kept running into some dense brush and hunkering. I didn't get too aggressive with her since she just started to trust me. When I first got her, she's run screaming if I walked towards her. Now she'll...

    Is my quarantine blown?

Well, I've had a single chicken for a little over a month now. About a week and a half ago I picked up another 6 hens to keep her company. I quarantined the new flock about 200 feet from the main coop. Today, while free ranging, the original hen found the pen the new birds are in! She always...

I think all chicken owners should.......

Quote: That is a huge problem in MA since the legislature banned trapping a few years ago--all animal populations boomed, of course, especially raccoon, coyote, fox and fisher. There was a bill, HB736, that was supposed to lift the ban because of all the attacks in the state, but the trapping...

All my chickens, ducks are dead!!!!

rub the neck feathers up slowly so you can see the skin under them and look for puncture marks from teeth. No puncture/teeth marks= human.
