Salmonella is a naturally occurring bacteria on chickens, just like Staphylococcus is on mammals. Normal healthy individuals that wash their hands after handling chickens or other poultry have little to be concerned with. Young children, the elderly,, or those with compromised immune systems...

At that age its entirely guesswork. as they mature the males will be mostly white with black stripes.and the females will be mostly black with white stripes. As they reach 6 weeks its incredibly easy to tell.
