Hiya, any suggestions?
I haven't candled the eggs at all, I didn't want to disturb my broody.
I wanted to put day olds under her when the eggs she on start to pip but not even sure if these eggs were fertile now, different cockerel to last year. The chicks at the farm are 2 days old now and I...
Can you put day old chicks under a hen which has been broody for 10 days? Has anyone done this, what results have you had?
I don't want the eggs shes sat on to develop any more or hatch out as i don't want any boys! I did put a post in before, but haven't had any replies.
Please reply :D x
I have foxes about. my chickens free range all day, I can hear them clucking if there is danger about, that's when I have to put them in the run. I also put them in the run if I'm out for the day. It's just for piece of mind. Also if predators move in to the area they will start stalking out the...
Last year my mother hen had her chicks roosting on knee hight roosting bars at 2 weeks old, so I would also advise some dowels or clean sturdy sticks just from the garden.
It's really supprising how much they could fly, seemed much more than adult chickens for size comparison!
So chicken wire...
Any advice please?
I'm going to the farm today to see when their incubated chicks will arrive. Unfortunately my local farm owner is grumpy and unwilling to offer very much advice at all. I'm not really sure where another farm is and we don't have pet shops who sell anything more than rodents and...
Hi, Any advice on when to pop day old chicks under my broody hen please? She's been broody for a week and is settled in a separate coop from the rest of the flock.
Last year I had a broody hatch out fertile eggs, but I don't want any chance of roosters this year, so i will get sexed chicks...
Thank you, my kids are 4,8 and 9, my 4 year old is very tall often mistaken for a 6 year old! They are all tall. But only my 9 year old goes to them on his own, he's very good with animals.
I'm hoping that he will stay nice as time goes on. I have 1 older hen who is still in charge of the...
Thanks for your replies. The children don't go in with the chickens without me any way. I will just continue 'walk through' him. Perhaps get the children to do this too if they are about. Generally if I'm in the garden I'm busy and I just keep walking when they try and get under my feet. I've...
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can suggest wether my roo will grow spurs? At 7 months he has little bumps, but then so do the hens. Do all Roos have spurs or is it just random?
He's cross between my Buff Pekin roo and light Sussex hen. He towers over all the ladies in the flock, anyone know when...
Great, thanks Arielle, there is lots of information to digest there! I'm going to look for dr Amens books now. Much better suggestions than our last doctor, who told me to give him sweets or cakes at snack time! My kids rarely have these anyway. Luckily my son was too busy playing lego to listen...
I've never owned this breed or any bantams, not sure if they mature quicker than large chickens? But it does look rather like its gonna be a roo. Hopefully she will be a pullet. Time will tell if it crows. Hope somone has a look soon who keeps then.:)
I have a similar problem, on occasion I will have to play "hunt the eggs!" Around the garden! Where all the hens will lay else where for a few days. A favourite spot is behind the compost heap or under the trampoline of all places! I have had to keep them inclosed in their run for a few hours...
