I need help getting my chickens to find their nesting boxes!

"Whenever I have discovered "floor nests" in my barn, I immediately place something very large in that area, its usually in a corner and I usually put an aluminum garbage can in the space so they can't get to that corner at all any more." That's great advice. I'll try doing that. Can't do...

Yes! They do have minds of their own! I'm learning this quickly, ha.

I need help getting my chickens to find their nesting boxes!

Don't feel bad. I have lovely nest boxes for my hens too and they refuse to use them. They also lay on the coop floor. Tonight I replaced the pine shavings and shredded paper with hay to see if they like that better. I just wonder if it's too small a space for them. Our boxes are 12x12, but...

Using egg boxes and broken eggs

The hens always roost. They only go in the coop to sleep and lay eggs. I have to close off the nest boxes at night otherwise the younger ones sleep in them, we forgot a couple times and they got in them. But we figured that would happen. So they are only open during the day for laying. And...

Using egg boxes and broken eggs

Thanks for such a great reply! I'll have to take a photo, but my nest boxes are built on to the side of the coop. If you look at my profile pic, the nest boxes (3 of them 12x12 ea) come out of the left side of the coop. We went by size recommendations from various coop building books. I hope...

Two thin shelled eggs layed from roost this morning! HELP!!!

I think my hen is laying from the roost too! She just started laying on Sunday, and so far I've had two busted eggs :-( Thankfully my roost is removeable, so I took it out and will only leave it in at night time. We'll see! Silly bird :-/

Using egg boxes and broken eggs

I have two black australorps that are now laying eggs. One has been laying for a few weeks, but I can't get her to use the egg boxes! She used it once and then went back to her favorite spot, right in front of the coop door (the chicken's door to the coop). I guess she doesn't need privacy...

I've read that herbs are a natural fly repellent, cuts down on pests. I haven't used any as of yet, but was considering hanging a few sprigs of Rosemary in the coop. The chicken chick has a recipe for making your own herb mixture.

    sick pullet - advice?

Thanks so much. The hen that is laying is my 23 week old. She is the one that I think has the blood issue, but it was not in her stool, it was in the bedding near where she lays her eggs. I haven't seen blood anywhere else in the coop or run. She looks fine otherwise, hopefully everyone will...

    sick pullet - advice?

Thank you mrscbass. I just went to check on my girl and she was dead. So sad. I think I'll try to find that Cordin tomorrow. That and clean out the coop. Oh dear, what a "welcome" to chicken keeping :-( So sorry to hear you lost one too.

    sick pullet - advice?

I am new to chickens. Just got my girls last weekend! I have two 23 week olds and five 6 wk olds. Today my little 6 week old Easter Egger wouldn't move, just sat there and slept. I kept an eye on her, but after a few hours of her not moving I decided she was sick and put her in a dog carrier...

    Mixing Chicks of Different Ages

I'm brand new to raising chickens. I just got two 23 week old hens and five 6 week olds. The breeder told me they'd be fine together. They've been together two days now. I have them in a coop with large pen/run since we can't free range. Anyway, the older girls are picking on the "babies"...
