    Brooder Bedding??

We used newspaper on top of wood shavings that we changed out twice daily. After a week, we had them on shavings only. No problems.

    Any other truly "lonely onlies"?

Swampcat and Barbieszoo, being the second oldest of 4 kids and a male, let me share some of my thoughts with you. Three of us grew up about 2 years apart in age. It was a total disaster! my oldest brother thought, THOUGHT he could use me and my next youngest sister as punching bags or his chores...

    Nest boxes VS Hens

It appears to me that I'm going to end up with 28 young uns' because all the folks that 'promised' they wanted some chickens have disappeared . So, I'm going with 8 boxes. Actually, one of my neighbors kids is a milk and dairy delivery guy and he is always bringing Dad home empty milk crates...

Slant Roof for Dummies - HELP

I just finished my new 8x12 hen house, (well its weathered in anyway). I used a slopped (slant roof) also. Because the shed is 8ft wide, I used 2x4x10s, stood on their sides and used hurricane strips as mentioned in earlier posts. After that I toe-nailed one nail into the header just because...

    4 weeks old

My babies will be 4 weeks old on Jan. 29th. We're looking at high 40's low 50's this weekend. Is it still too cool to put them in a day pen outside for a little bit? They have to be getting tired of looking at the same old walls. If it's too cool when would be about the right temp? They aren't...

    one legged chic

Barrdwing, Thanks for your kind words of support and encouragement. When the daughter and grandson came out this weekend to check on 'his and pappas chitens' he asked whwere Lucy was. I assured him that Lucy is doing just fine and is all better now. I am new to chickens so any input is...

    one legged chic

Well, after several days of watching this one legged chick hobble and flap around, hiding, disassociating itself from her brooder mates, and one chic constantly pecking at her, I finally got up the courage to cull her. It took more self strength than I thought it would. Don't get me wrong, I...

Scratch in the winter do you or don't you?

Mine are to and the egg count has not been affected at all, nor their health that I can tell. We usually have cornbread about twice a week and I'll have a few pieces left over to save for the girls. we also dry and crumble the egg shells and they get that about twice a week. They seem to be...

Scratch in the winter do you or don't you?

I mix about 30% scratch to my girls laying portion and throw a little of the mix out for them to peck at. The rest goes in the feeder. I keep the feeder filled so they eat when they need to.

    one legged chic

That is hilarious! Before I saw this we did some soul searching and decided to let mother nature take its course. She eats and waters okay, and none of the other chics bother her in fact, we hae one that just follows her around and waits for her to settle and then settles beside her. We're...

Average cost of rasing baby chicks?

I'm paying $21 for a 50 lb bag of starter. I purchased 29 sexed day olds. i already have 1/2 of them sold when they are 8 weeks old here in about a month, for $10.00 each. That leaves me 13 or 14 for my new flock. I figure I'll be okay. Not looking to make a profit though, just recover some of...
