I hatched a straight run and all of the cockerels had bright red combs and wattles and evidence of hackle feathers around 8 weeks old. I sold a few pullets and now I’m receiving photos of one of my pullets I sold that has a curly tail feather! All of the cockerels in this hatch have prominent...
Thank you for the help! Good idea on the angled board! Those windows are not covered. There’s one on all 4 sides of the hen house to provide ventilation/air circulation. The doors on the end of the hen house provide a 4’x4’ open air window. It is predator proofed with hardware cloth. The hens...
Thank you! I stayed out there with them tonight until it looked like they were going to jump up there. I herded them into the run and they went into the coop to roost. Im going to do as you suggested and start putting them in there earlier in the evening to make sure they don’t have a chance to...
It’s definitely hot right now, but I have ventilation on all 4 sides of the coop so there’s good airflow. Definitely could be a factor. I have 2 hens and 4 younger birds (about 8 weeks old).
My 6 month olds were doing great and roosting where they were supposed to. One evening the wind blew the coop door shut before they went to roost and when I got home to check on the gals, they were roosting outside of the chicken coop on top of their nesting boxes (photos attached). I thought it...
The Blue Australorps are 7 weeks. I’m fairly certain it’s a cockerel now. He’s started to get the attitude of one already. He’s tried to challenge the older hens a few times and runs his little flock of 4.
Thank you!! I'm hoping he's sweet. I'm going to try and keep him. Hopefully will be a good addition. May even try and hatch some Blue Australorps since he has 1 Blue and 2 Black hens to breed with. Hopefully I can somehow separate the Orpington eggs from the Australorps. Will need a lot more...
Thank you! And by "grow into a better rooster" you mean friendlier? Also, is there anything extra I should do to make sure the rooster doesn't get out of my yard? I've read they can be harder to contain.
I bought 2 blue australorp chicks from a pullet bin. Was taking photos of them today and realized one of them has a significantly larger comb and wattles are already coming in. I think it's a roo. I've never had a rooster before. Can yall confirm, and also provide any advice that might be...
Thank you for the information! This is super helpful. Regarding the heat: We've had unusually cold weather for spring (temps in the 50s at night, and 70s during the day). It couldn't possibly be heat related at this point, but I had considered the challenge of raising these cold hardy birds in...
