Training cats to leave chickens alone

When I got my chicks in June, I introduced my 4yo cat to my chicks the day they came in the mail and supervised them together for the first few months. When the chicks were small I would put them outside in a dog crate so the cat could see & sniff them but not eat them. The cat took down a...

    True Blue Whiting info please?

Yes, the white one is the WTB and she lays blue eggs. They fly, not far but high. Her favorite perch is the peak of the shed we converted to the coop, especially when it is covered in snow in the dark so she blends in and you can't find her for hours, lol.

    True Blue Whiting info please?

I got one each of the WTB and WTG from Murray McMurray this past June. I get an egg every day from both birds and the eggs went from being small to being the large size you get in the grocery store. My WTB is friendly & will perch on you but the WTG is timid and will only sit with you on her...

    Not laying

I am also new so i have some questions, please be patient. Is she your only layer? If no, are you certain it was she who layed multiples? I had 2 ladies in the same box laying at the same time the other day - one was a blue egg layer, the other a brown. If I hadn't witnessed it, I wouldn't...

Frozen Side Mounted Horizontal Nipples - How to keep them from Freezing?

I am in Vermont where temps have been in the low 20s & teens during the day & single digits at night. I use the Little Giant Hen Hydrator, a hanging 5 gal nipple watered with an Aqueoun 300w submersible fish tank heater in it. My water or nipples haven't frozen yet and all 15 chickens have...

    Do you like buff orpingtons?

We love our "buffingtons" (as our kid calls them) our 2 girls were handled a lot as chicks so they are sweet and cuddly. One comes to the door at dusk to remind us it's time for the flock to be put to bed.

    True Blue Whiting info please?

My WTB, along with all of my other June chicks, started layinglast week. The eggs are a light blue, maybe even blue/green. They're all pretty small right now but getting a little bigger each day. I may have 2 WTB's, I found 4 blue eggs in about a 30 hour time span.

Topic of the Week - Nest boxes

Do you cut the front of the milk crate down or just leave the box with the top open?

    Hi!

Do you have a favorite and a least favorite? My favorites so far are 2 of my cockerel's - one of the 3 dark brahma's named Nigel and my Silver Phoenix named Stewie. Least favorite so far, maybe she will grow on me is Miranda, my 11 y.o. sons Dominique. She is flighty and annoying!
