I have 2 chickens (amer. rooster and hen) that I have raised from the egg. I have spent a ton of time feeding them by hand, petting, holding, and protecting. They will both will let me walk right up and pick them up when I want.
Don't loose faith but I'll tell ya, I've spent hours working...
Of course! Haven't you seen "Lady and the Tramp"?
Seriously, My chickens get all the table scraps but my dogs have eaten that kind of stuff a hundred times. What would make you ask that?
God Bless,
Me, my Wife, my 3 kids, 5 goats, 30 chickens, 2 ginueas, Cat, 2 Dogs, 5 fish, and 4 bunnies will all keep our fingers, hooves, talons, paws, and fins crossed.
Good Luck and God Bless,
Well I think chickens are all politicians in general. They cackle all day long, stand around doing nothing, give you a bunch of crap, and when you ask them to do some work they lay an egg!
Hey, that egg was bad. I hope you don't get a tummy ache from it. You really should keep your coop clean...
I don't have this problem since I "gutted out" a singlewide mobile home for my coop, but couldn't you guys just box in a ceramic heater that has a thermostat?
Well the girls smell like a Daisy. "Daffy's girlfriend" (just a little Warner Brothers Cartoon humor).
Doing the old "vent check" is the only way to tell at that age. If you don't know how or don't trust yourself. You can take em to your local farmers market and there will be at least 5...
Silke, I think your newbies will be just fine. Mom hops up off em for a few minutes when they're in the nest so the 1.5 min shouldn't hurt em at all. Don't refer to it as your "stupidity". We've all done some things that in hind-sight we wouldn't have that may have hurt or killed livestock...
I too used a red "warming Light" and never had any issues with chirping when ours were chicks. I did have one that did stand out when I came in the room so I banded him as a chick. He ended up being my one and only rooster out of the 8 chicks we bought. His name is Elvis and he sings to me...
Wow! I started that last post before yours came up!
Sounds like your trying what I just said. Good for you! Just keep being stern and she'll get it.
God Bless,

Candy,
I have had a similar problem with my Great Pyrenese. He wasn't raised with chickens, (only goats) so he didn't know what to do other than grab them and shake them. I put him on a leash and took him to the coop. I stood with him and let him smell the chickens at a distance. Needless...
Hey Folks! Thank you so much for all your kind words. I am very sorry for those of you that have shared similar stories with me.
We had a great thing happen over the weekend. A really nice couple had 4 rod. reds and 2 easter eggers that they didn't want any more so they gave them to us...
We just got our first chicks about 3 months ago and yesterday my 4 year old told my wife he had a "suprise" out at the coop. He took her out there and said "look! feathers every where!" He didn't notice that we had lost 6 of our 11. We are heart broken. Being so new to chickens we have spend...

We moved to the country less than a year ago and we are all settled now so we just got 5 chicks. I have a completly empty single-wide mobile home complete with doggie doors, ramps and fencing. I want to build nesting boxes and perches all over the place and make them as comfortable as possible...
