I don't think a fence is a very good idea unless it has a roof. If it has a roof you don't have to worry about clipping wings and hawks. I suggest you raise from chicks because they are much nicer and you know them better. If you were to get chicks 10-12 would be good place to start.
Also you...
We washed up hen2, and completely dis contaminated all of the perches and nesting boxes with soap and water. We replaced the shavings on the floor and in the nesting boxes. We washed out the feeder and the waterer. We placed both the hens in the chickery, one in a dog crate so they are with each...
All the chickens with the sickness are the new ones, and they have been in the coop for about 6-7 months, so they are pretty acclimated with the coop and other chickens.
We just got back from the feed store where they gave us something called tetracylcine and they told us to put one teaspoon...
They are in an approximately 12x10 ft dirt floor coop with access to a similar sized run. We have six red ones including “hen1 and hen2”, two white ones (three including our rooster), and one black and one brown one with black tipped feathers. I don’t know the breeds because we forgot, but we...
We have owned chickens for a very many years, and a couple months ago, after raising 8 more chicks to add to our flock, have established a good flock of 14 hens, very nice and docile, and without problems-- until we started having problems.
First of all one hen got stuck in between the food bin...
Here are the three things that I found really helped when it came to figuring out if its a rooster or not.
1) Is it jumping on the other chicken?
2) Does it crow? This is a pretty good sign that it is a rooster! :D
3) Patience, make sure you have patience for either of these signs.
I used to...
Today when I went out to our chicken coop, there was one of our hens huddling in the corner, I was sure she was dead because she wasn't moving, so I tried to pull her out, but the second I touched her she jumped up and started running away. The second she got her head out of the corner the rest...
:goodpost:
We live in near Dallas, and we have never needed insulation for winter. Of all the chickens we have had they have never needed insulation. Our coop is made of old wood and the only thing they ever have trouble with when it comes to temperature is the heat. I think you need to make...
We were planning to go to the feed store to pick up some Poultry Cell, however this morning we checked on her, and I am sad to report that she died last night. I feel so bad for her. We found her laying there with her head tucked under her wing. Thanks so much for helping though!
If your chickens aren't sitting on the eggs almost every time you see them, then they probably aren't broody, which means they won't sit on their eggs, which means the eggs won't hatch. You could sell your eggs while you're waiting for your hens to go broody. When we are waiting for our hens to...
The last couple of days we have not checked on our chickens because we have been so busy with a lot of things, however when I went out there today I only counted 13 out of the 14 chickens I know we have. I searched around the coop, but could not find any sign that anything had eaten the chicken...
I have had a few hens go broody and one even hatched a few! Hens can get VERY feisty when broody, they will refuse to leave their eggs, and will bite you if you touch them! (I found this out the hard way) They will also screech and scream if you come near. (I found this out the hard way also) If...
