I've been finding a lot of cracked eggs over the last few weeks. Often times it's a small piece missing from the tip of the egg, sometimes long cracks, occasionally a broken egg. I've put out more oyster shells though I never see them going for it, and it doesn't seem like a shell strength...
Hi Coach,
Thank you for the response and all the detail. Having considered that and all other factors I decided to euthanize. Sad but also feel it was the best decision given the circumstances. I very much appreciate all the advice.
I will be doing a lot of research on prolapse for future...
Just saw one of our chickens has what seems like a bad wound near her butt. Seems like organ or organs are hanging out, and I see maggots writhing around on the side.
I am guessing this is a situation in which I need to euthanize, and in a past similar situation we naively tried to heal a bad...
Ah I meant to say - found a soft shell egg with her this morning! So seems she is passing eggs with is a relief, but definitely still having some issues. I've put some calcium gluconate in the water as well to hopefully help with this, though again, any suggestions welcome as it's hard to...
Thanks ChickenLeg. I got the powder Corid, so mixed a small amount according to the bag instructions (10mg of amprolin per 2.2lb of body weight) and gave to her directly this morning (per instructions in that link - very helpful thank you!). Will plan to repeat that for the next few days...
Thanks Eggcessive. Add Amprolium as instructed, tried to get some in her mouth to make sure she gets it but also added to their water. Not sure she got more than a handful of drops of the solution, was just slowly dropping it on her beak and seeing what she licks off.
The poultry guy at the...
Hello,
We have a Rhode Island Red of about 12-15mo who has started acting extremely lethargic and is lying down and closing her eyes around the yard. She also hasn't passed an egg for about a week that we have been able to find. We thought that may have been due to the stress from two new hens...
Our current hen / set up is for free range in the backyard. We have a 4x8' coop.
From your reaction and what I've read, it sounds like the thing to do would be to go get some more hardware cloth and build a temporary cage elsewhere in the yard to leave the two new birds for a week or so.
If...
Through a series of devastating incidents, our small 4-hen flock has been reduced to a smaller 1-hen flock. Our remaining hen certainly seems less active and lonely, and has been having egg production issues. We’re planning to introduce two more hens and had a couple questions to make sure it...
Thank you both for the thoughts and responses. She does have some of the symptoms you mention (has been laying around, sometimes in her nesting box, a bit more than normal), but not most (no watery liquid discharge, no walking funny, etc.). As for temp, it's been 90-100 in the afternoons, so hot...
Our ~20 month-old Rhode Island Red has recently stopped laying, nearly four days in a row now. We're concerned that she could be egg-bound but 1) are not clear how to tell that's the case and 2) what we can do about it.
She has always been a fairly consistent layer, typically 6-7 days a week...
