    Integration completion question

That’s a consideration. She is going in willingly now, but she’s camped out on the shelf with her friend at around 8pm, but I sing their roosting song and she goes in, So basically I have to round her up. but the Bantam, who is not laying yet is unfazed. She lets me scoop her up and put her...

    Integration completion question

There is a shelf in the outbuilding that the coop is positioned in. The enclosure is three and a half walls, with a grid wire fence to close it. So critters could get inside the enclosure but we’ve had good luck so far.

    Integration completion question

Yes it’s probably too small. The new girls seem to want to roost outside the hen house, but they choose to sit on a shelf despite the roost that is in there. Plus, they wouldn’t be totally safe from predators but so far so good. I didn’t ask about winter warmth and ventilation, but I appreciate...

    Integration completion question

Thank you. This is what we have. I’ve had three hens in there the past winter and they were fine. I know four is pushing it, but I could not send one new bird in there solo.

    Integration completion question

I don’t know what goes on at night. There is still a little bullying in the enclosure during the day. I know when I integrated the RIRs with my one hen at the time she would knock them off the roost but they eventually figured it out. I can’t scoop up the BJG, she’s a runner. Would it help...

    Integration completion question

Hi! I have integrated two new pullets with my two RIR hens by putting the pullets in the lower part (caged area of TSC coop— the coop is in a building enclosure) while the hens go in the hen house/roosting area. They free range together ish during the day. Now one pullet is laying, the other is...

    Chicken bedtime routine / songs

Hi everyone! I just want to chime in and share a piece of advice I read when first started chickens. I don’t remember if it was on BYC or somewhere else…. Someone suggested when your chicks are training to go to roost at night, it’s helpful to sing to them, then they’ll associate the song with...

    Buff Orpington infrequent egg laying

They do all have access to oyster shells. I’ve noticed they are a bit more picked over lately, it doesn’t seem like they choose them too often. I’ll get them some calcium citrate too.

    Egg color… speckled?!

Hello! I have two Rhode Island reds, not quite a year old. They started laying in early December and they are doing great, free range walks with my old lady hen. They of course lay brown eggs, and Ive found it interesting that one lays a darker brown than the other. Often, the lighter brown...

    Buff Orpington infrequent egg laying

I need to piggy back on this question in search of my own answers. My older hen ( from my sil, so I’m not sure of age, possibly 4?years old) She had a few rubber eggs this winter. Or gelatin like eggs. As is warming up now, she laid for a few weeks, some very bumpy eggs… but not the last two...

    Hired help ignored chickens

Thank you for this perspective. I talked about it with a friend and we discussed how our parents wouldn’t have allowed us to accept payment for a job we didn’t do satisfactorily. Plus now I have to wonder how many days he didn’t let them out. i trust people until they give me reason not to.

I’ll pay him, I don’t want to end the relationship. But may ask him how much he thinks he should get this time.

    Hired help ignored chickens

Thank you for this. I am trying to be understanding. It is pretty clear there is no food or water inside, it’s small and he can see inside. Although I can imagine if he made his decision from his house and not in the lean to, the position of the food and water may have slipped his mind. I have...
