    Buff Orpington infrequent egg laying

They do all have access to oyster shells. I’ve noticed they are a bit more picked over lately, it doesn’t seem like they choose them too often. I’ll get them some calcium citrate too.

    Egg color… speckled?!

Hello! I have two Rhode Island reds, not quite a year old. They started laying in early December and they are doing great, free range walks with my old lady hen. They of course lay brown eggs, and Ive found it interesting that one lays a darker brown than the other. Often, the lighter brown...

    Buff Orpington infrequent egg laying

I need to piggy back on this question in search of my own answers. My older hen ( from my sil, so I’m not sure of age, possibly 4?years old) She had a few rubber eggs this winter. Or gelatin like eggs. As is warming up now, she laid for a few weeks, some very bumpy eggs… but not the last two...

    Hired help ignored chickens

Thank you for this perspective. I talked about it with a friend and we discussed how our parents wouldn’t have allowed us to accept payment for a job we didn’t do satisfactorily. Plus now I have to wonder how many days he didn’t let them out. i trust people until they give me reason not to.

I’ll pay him, I don’t want to end the relationship. But may ask him how much he thinks he should get this time.

    Hired help ignored chickens

Thank you for this. I am trying to be understanding. It is pretty clear there is no food or water inside, it’s small and he can see inside. Although I can imagine if he made his decision from his house and not in the lean to, the position of the food and water may have slipped his mind. I have...

    Hired help ignored chickens

Hi all! I’m going to share my frustrating story, then a question if you think this is affecting egg laying. I was away for ten days helping a friend. I pay a neighbor kid to let the chickens (three hens) out in the morning and close them up at night. I had a friend come by on Sunday (superbowl...

    Senior hen dropping eggs

You all have been very helpful with my past questions. So here’s another. My senior Hen seems to be dropping eggs. There were a couple rubber eggs when the weather turned cold. Two days ago I found one of her eggs on the ground in the lean to. A couple times her egg has been next to the...

    Winter/summer quarters

Thank you! That’s what I thought. They’d figure it out pretty quickly.

    Winter/summer quarters

Hello chicks! I’m thinking ahead to summer! We built windbreak walls on part of our lean to in order to block the crazy South Dakota winds and protect the chickens from the cold. We used clear corrugated polycarbonate roofing panels to build the walls. This allows daylight in and allows the...

Intro two chicks to one hen

The hen is an experienced free ranger. The chicks once escaped the run and behaved reasonably, staying close to home base. If they are all three friends now, they’ll be fine.

Intro two chicks to one hen

Update: the neighbor kids closed up the coop last night and reported that that the chicks were on the roost! I assume the hen was up there too so we have turned a corner! So should we let them get friendly now… can I trust them to go free range as a team, or is more camaraderie needed?
