    We have 3 7-week-old chicks free ranging in the yard (not very big). Twice or three times a day there's a cat walking on the fence checking out our chicks. We scare the cat away if we see it. But we can't always be there. We read somewhere chicks at this age should be safe from cats. Is that true?

    pine shavings vs. newspaper?

    We have been using pine shavings and we never used paper towels nor newspapers. Chicks have been happy with the setting and we didn't see any problems. I think it provides enough tractions. The smell is good too.

    Our chicks could fly pretty high too when they were babies. btw, our EE is also the largest and the most developed among the three. (the other two are RIR and gold-sex link). Is it a breed thing?
