We just noticed a leghorn eating some muriate of potash fertilizer that was spread around our potato crop. She appeared to spit it out, but just wondering if this is safe for our girls?
We'll be putting up a fence shortly.
We have a rescue pitbull and were concerned about her and the chickens. What we have learned about dogs like her is that they need a "job". Henna (the pitbull)'s job is taking care of chickens. We started when they were chicks (and do this with every new batch)...every time we feed them...
UPDATE THREE YEARS LATER: Just after my last post, a friend and her son "chicken sat" while we were on vacation and named our girl "Lolo". A few weeks after she started bearing weight again, Lolo's toes started falling off...not gruesome, the ends just shriveled up and fell off. She was left...

We have a chicken who is living indoors this winter...she is in a wire dog kennel with pine shavings and mason jar feeder/waterers. This morning her chirp sounds scratchy. It sounds like she's losing her voice or has a sore throat. I think she might be shaking her head more than usual, too...
We had dogs first and then got chicks. At first, I'm pretty sure the dogs really wanted to kill the chicks. We kept them separated (dog on leash, or chickens behind a snow fence) at first and always made sure we were close by if both dogs and chickens were out at the same time. A stern "no"...
Great news! Our girl is walking around her cage and putting weight on both feet. Still using her wing as a crutch, but the swollen foot looks much better! Following Andora's vet's advice I've been doing Epsom salt soaks 1-2x daily followed by pouring hydrogen peroxide over her feet, then...
Since she is usually a free ranger, should I be providing some kind of grit while she's indoors? She's not eating much of her layer feed, but likes the bread, fruit, eggs, etc. I've been feeding her.
OK, one more question...
She is normally a free ranger...should I be providing her some kind of grit while she's indoors? We haven't had to buy any yet, so I'm not sure what to get. I'm asking because I noticed her doing this weird opening and closing of her beak and moving around her...
OK, I promise, no more popping.
I've been soaking her feet 2x a day, which she seems to like. Keeps trying to drink the salty water, though. When I have her out for the next soak I'll pour the hydrogen peroxide over. I'll keep slathering with the antibiotic ointment and I have some dog...
Thanks so much! I love the pic!
I wandered around our local hardware store today until I found the perfect thing. A 16 gallon black plastic utility tub. It fits PERFECTLY in the crate (so perfectly it wouldn't fit in the door, I had to unclip the front panel) and has 8" sides. I love the...
We need to keep one of our girls indoors for the next few weeks or more until her feathers grow back and foot hopefully heals...
We have her temporarily in a large rubbermaid bin with hay, a light, food, water... she can move around but we want to give her more room to roam. We have a wire...
I would highly recommend reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. She doesn't go much into the historical origins of our food, but a lot about where it currently comes from (like, asparagus in January...) and about genetic engineering, all mixed into a great story about her...
One Hundred Years of Solitude~Gabriel Garcia Marquez...took some time to get into it, but once I did it was magical.
Latest favorite...Animal, Vegetable, Miracle~ Barbara Kingsolver...I have a feeling many BYCers would like it!
