    When do hens molt?

Hi all, I have hens that are just 1 year old (got them March 1st last year as day old chicks). Question though, when do they molt? I have 1 buff orpington who looks like she's molting. Losing feathers, looks really funny, but I'm not sure if she's molting or being bullied. No one else...

Rodent Smoke Bomb - safe for chickens?

I"ve scoured the forum but haven't found a straight forward answer to my question. Rodent Smoke Bomb by Revenge (I think Revenge is the brand), will this be safe to use near my chickens. We'll let the chickens free range away from their coop and run while we do this. We'll light the bombs...

Do chickens slow down eating for winter?

Yes, they have plenty of water, we fill it nightly. Hasn't frozen yet so not problem w/ that. Would a lack of water cause them to slow down eating their feed?

Do chickens slow down eating for winter?

I've noticed my chickens are not eating as much of their feed recently. Not sure if it's due to the time of year or are they finding more to eat out in their run,,,,, We live in MA, so days are getting much shorter and colder. We used to have to fill up their feeder daily and w/in the past...

Shorter Daylight, laying slowing down, what feed?

Hi all, I have a few hens, they are about 9-10 months old. They were laying fine all summer and now I'm down to about 1-3 eggs per day (from 7 hens, was getting 6-7 eggs daily during summer months). I realize its the shorter days and that they will most likely stop laying for the winter...

    Egg Size

Hello, I am starting to get eggs from the girls. BUT I'm a bit surprised by how small they are. Not sure what I expected, but these are teeny. As the girls get older will the eggs get bigger? So far I've just got eggs from my buff orpington and easter Eggers, the barred rocks haven't...

    Easter Egger, boy or girl?

Thank you everyone for your input! I'm crossing fingers that she's a gal. Maybe she is just getting close to laying her first egg and is following the others, I do have a couple of fake eggs in the nesting box and that's where all our eggs have been laid so far, crossing fingers that continues...

    Easter Egger, boy or girl?

All my birds are the same age (got them as day old chicks on March 1st). I have 1 buff orpington laying (smallish eggs, first 2 thin shelled and broke, then changed food to layers food and have rcvd 2 good eggs from her) and 1 Easter Egger has given me 2 hard shelled light blue eggs. This...

    Easter Egger, boy or girl?

Hmmm, I have 2 Easter Eggers and one is definitely laying already. A nice big sky blue egg, have 2 from her and she's in there trying to lay again. Not sure if she's an early girl but she is laying. Elissa

    Easter Egger, boy or girl?

This is an Easter Egger, about 4-1/2 months old (got her/him March 1st as a day old chick), 90% sexed to be female but there is always a chance it could be a rooster. What do you guys think? Reason I'm asking is cause I thought it was a girl, 2 of my girls are just starting to lay eggs and...

Straw? Hay? Wood Chips? On run floor...

Hello, We've moved the ladies outside, and they are enjoying it. I like watching them get braver and braver each day. We let them free range and at first they stayed very close to their coop/run but are exploring further each day. Sweet to watch. Question though, the covered run is really...

    Yogurt?

To clarify, my girls are getting a decent starter food. I'm just interested in giving them treats occasionally and I had heard that yogurt is a favorite of some birds. I just didn't want to give them an overly sweet or processed yogurt so was just asking which kind folks used. I honestly...
