We really enjoyed meeting Lee & friends Saturday. It was also fun to watch people staring at this pretty coop while hauling it down the interstate. Lol. Thanks again for letting us build your coop! Luray & Kevin Rominger
p.s. chicks hatching right now!
In case anyone else reads this thread-last night my chick burned its eye on the element and this morning its closed and milky looking first time using the lg as a hatcher. Poor thing.
DH will have to rework this weekend before the ducks hatch.
I know this is an old thread but my big chick did this just last night after hatching-it'seye is shut this morning and looks bad. I am misting it with colloidal silver to prevent infection. Any other ideas?
Poor thing-I feel bad -I'm going to have DH work on this before next hatch
From the Mountains of NC-
Our chicken endeavors started April 2011 with 6 day old red star chicks from Tractor Supply. We used a plastic tub with shavings for a brooder and a heat lamp with red bulb for warmth. It really helped having a digital thermometer in there with them for quick check...
In my Octo 20 the factory thermometer in the top of the bator read 100-100.5 and the accurite (which doesn't show a decimal) read 99 in the tray. My banties hatched a day early and my own mutts hatched right on day 21. I did not have to adjust from factory but I ran it for 2 days before...
I have this problem with only one hen-our EE Ellie flies the coop to lay her eggs in a doghouse-stays with them all night but abandons them all day-10 eggs in their now-I was hoping she would sit but no luck so far.
My DH says she is too good to lay her blue eggs with the brown eggs the little...
I don't know about the roosting yet but my 2 month old silkies navigate a 5 foot long ramp pretty well now. We have 2 a buff hen named Lavender and a black or blue roo named Dark Vader (yes Dark the 7 year old named him)

We have a little sebright roo named Uno because he was our first chick ever hatched too! He went around pecking at all the other chicks while they tried to hatch like "hurry up"!
That was 8 weeks ago...we also hatched a black silkie who my DS (7 yo) named Dark (yes, dark) Vader. We...
I have to agree with the sentiments on this thread-tell ya what...if you live near Boone, NC , I can hook you up! I think half the peeps at my kids charter school have chickens!
Breakfast for supper!!!! Once a week!
I bought eggs from ebay in October-golden sebrights ordered 10 got a full dozen-hatched 5/12-silkies from a different person ordered 8 got 9 hatched 2/9. Not bad for shipped eggs (read fairly inexpensive) and my very first time incubating. We threw in 3 of our own (luckily) and all of those...

Me too!!!
I have sebrights and silkies in a pen together (just 8 weeks old) but I wonder what that would look like!
We have the cutest (blue? black?) little roo named Dark Vader (named by DS age 7). He is so full of himself there is no way its a hen!
I can't believe I am giving this advice twice in one day but if the others show interest in picking I'd would cover the area in Blue Kote. After the dog attack at our place I had several girls with purple feathers/skin who all healed nicely with no pecking from the others. However the pretty...
