I chop mine in half with a shovel and throw it in. My chickens don't eat the skin just the pulp seeds and flesh so if I don't chop it they just peck at it a bit
So we have a skunk problem. I have 2 coops...the smaller one is next to the shed. Right now there are two roosters in there that I hatched and don't have it in me to put in the freezer...yet. They are Icelandics and escape from the dog pen run every day lol...then go back in by themselves...
Well don't worry then! They are fully feathered and as long as they have a place to go to get out of the wind and rain they will be fine! Mine love playing in the rain and even snow if it is not too bad. They can warm and dry themselves!
I always give mine the choice unless it is like blizzard weather. As long as they are fully featered and have a draft free place to get out of the weather they will be fine. A chickens body temp is 105 to 107 and they use their feathers to create a shield that holds air in and warms it making a...
Only new birds we have are ones we hatched ourselves and some chicks from tractor supply in March. We had a few snifffles 3 years ago when we first started the chicken experience but have been good since. I will check on her in the AM and see how things go from there.
Just noticed one of my EE hens falling asleep in the run. Went in and grabbed her since in my experience this is never a good sign. Noticed she has bubbles...like soap bubbles...in the corner of one eye. Anyone have any ideas? She's not super sick since she laid today(only one I have that does...
ok thank you! I will try the better feed. I do have oyster feed and feed dirty eggs back to the girls scrambled. I will make sure she gets extra before i try gain. It may just be bad luck. She is actually one of my roosters favorites and yeah the fertility rate is pretty good all but 1 of 6 were...
I am in the middle of my natural broody hatch(started this morning day 20) starting with 11 eggs...5 chicks hatched(yay)...3 pipped external and I can hear peeping. 1 yolker, 1 dead chick found outside of nest at day 17 and 1 no action just sitting there. The last 3 (yolker, dead chick, and...
I have been reading about using ash for dustbathing. Does anyone use burn barrel ash? We burn all our paper and cardboard and there is alot of ash we could use if it is safe.
My EE is an escape artist too! Every day she gets up on the metal waterer, flies to the top of the 6 foot enclosure, and hops down like it is nothing. Silly girl!
