related to this, I was visiting a friend who used to have chickens, and is now boarding some for a family member. The family member stated that there is research showing that mixing breeds lowers the egg laying rate in "production" farms. Supposedly the chickens seem to have some attitude...
Isn't cull used more in relation to removing from the gene pool? I realize that it is most often done as killing, rather than the new term rehoming, (or whatever).
It also reminds me of one of the really nice terms I have seen on this site: freezer camp. Unfortunately with this term, some...

As a youngster I used to marvel at the wonders from the garden: how this carrot was shaped like a hand, how that potato was a snowman, and other such things.
When I was out on my own doing grocery shopping I was amazed at all those perfect vegetables and wondered how it was possible. I can't...
What I had thought the oddest is that the other hens started laying when the first stopped. That is the really neat thing about nature-- everyone/thing is different.
I have also noticed several new dust bathing holes in the yard, some really deep. I have caught the hens and the mutt teenagers burying themselves in these holes, sometimes 2 or 3 birds in a hole. Considering the new enthusiasm they have for this activity I will purchase some DE for them when I...
you're paying too much for buckets! go to Walmart deli/bakery. They sell empty buckets for $1. Round or square, 3 to 5 gallon buckets, usually with lids.
I had a wooden egg in the nest for some time, but last week they tossed it out of the nest. I put it back in, and they tossed it out again. There are 2 nest boxes, so I alternated it, and they tossed it out again. I am not at this time supplementing the light, but with the freezing nighttime...
This is my first year with chickens as an adult, and I have done much research on this site, and have learned much from those who post regularly.
In late April I got my first chicks, and all but one of them have started laying. The RSL started laying in August, laying an egg a day until this...
Thank you for your reply.
This morning got an egg much lighter than the ones the RSL is laying, and am now I get to figure out which of the others is laying. It is much too early in the day for RSL, Now I'm off to check the color range for BO and RIR. This egg is a light tan, the RSL has been...
I have 4 hens that I got at the end of April as day-old chicks (originally there were 6). One is RSL, 2 are BO, and 1 is RIR. The RSL has been laying for about 14 days now. (14 eggs)
I discovered my first egg as a nest of 9. The nest is in pine needles under a fallen branch under a sagebrush...
I have 4 hens I got as day-old chicks at the end of April, and they have free ranged in my yard since they feathered out. At night they were coming in to my screened porch through the doggie door (have 2 Chihuahua mixes) and were roosting on the rail by the front door. Right up against the door...
