I'm waiting for everyone to gawk at the egg first and then I'll crack it open to see! Maybe it's a double yolk, haven't had any of them since my chickens were younger.
I got woken up by my chicken's egg song this morning, thought it was particularly loud. This jumbo egg is why! Also interesting to see that the texture of the shell is quite wrinkly.
One of the first treats my chicks got was when they were four weeks old and I was in the garden building a coop for them - I was digging up the soil, and an earwig ran out. I went to kill the earwig before it hurt my chicks (hah!) but one of the chicks got to it first and gobbled it all up! They...
Haha thanks for your comment - I completely understand! Coming from a science background I know it's completely silly to expect that anything will quicken the ovulation/egg laying process, but I feel like I've been waiting for so long and now that I've finally got one, I want more!
After weeks of hoping and waiting, one of my girls laid one on Sunday!! Right in the nesting box next to a pool ball I had put there the day before :)
She laid a second one on Monday but nothing today- is that normal? I'm hoping the other two girls will soon follow by example, they're all 21...
Thanks for that, though it doesn't apply to me as I've always kept the rabbit separate from the chickens. He's an inside bunny and definitely thinks he's human! When the chicks were younger they were fairly indifferent to him, but now when they occasionally see him it looks like they want to...
Hopefully by the time they switch feed they'll eat properly. I don't think I've seen those brands where I live (Australia) but I'll have a proper look next time.
No worms that I've noticed. I've been feeling them barastoc pullet grower, which they don't really show an interest in. They'll eat only enough that they're not hungry, but even then it's only after 15 mins of scratching around to find anything else. I bought another unnamed brand of pellets...
I have two ISA Browns and an australorp. They're now almost 16 weeks old, but seem really skinny to me -all feathers and bone, hardly any fat/meat on them. They're also not eating as much as they used to, and losing feathers like there's no tomorrow. Is that normal? I might also put these...
Hey everyone, since joining BYC in November the only thread I've made is to determine what sex my chickens are. Hopefully with more experience in the future I can also contribute to other threads.
I've had chickens during my childhood up to when I was 12, so I haven't actually had experience...
