Sometimes, my roosters like to stick very close together, especially when they are hiding in a shady spot on a sunny day. They have 30000+ square metres to roam about, but choose to stick within 30cm of each other:
We grow milo/sorgham, sweet potatoes and seasoned green vegetables for our rooster flock.
We used to grow sunflowers as well, it went well the first year, my birds loved it! Then local wildlife discovered our sunflowers, by the third year, we lost half of the crop to a variety of parrots. By...
A few simple questions:
1) Exactly how old is she?
2) Did you inspect the leg, is there anything obvious, like open wound?
3) How is her diet? Has she eaten anything suspicious? Does she eat properly?
Limping legs could be a result of physical injury, disease or simple nutrition deficiency...
I would suggest to inspect your chickens frequently for mites and lice, it's a more common occurring problem than some people realise, especially if you free ranging your chickens.
I treat my chickens for mites and lice almost every year, sometimes twice a year. Lice/Mites on my chickens is a...
I hand raised 10+ hens over the past decade, never ran into that problem, not sure it's because I constantly catch and pet my chickens regularly - most of them squad for me. Maybe constantly towering over them while giving them massages work.
My free ranging chickens don't like layer mash or pellets either, but they will eat proper grains - wheat, cracked corn, Sorghum, Sunflowers, Oats etc.
Now, I would like to draw your attention to my hen flock.
In the front of this picture is Lil Bull, my beloved (Australorp mix? Sapphire Gem?) hen. She is the top chicken amongst the hens her age and the only hen who dares to (lightly) peck my hand when she feels that she is not getting her...
I would put multiple alluring nesting boxes with soft, dry straws (or pine shavings) and fake eggs into the dark corners of the coop and lock the pullets up for a few days, until they are trained to use the nesting boxes, before letting them free range again.
I happened to take this picture after had de-spurred my barred rock (mix) rooster yesterday.
He is the one in the front of this picture:
He likes to crow (albeit being a beta) and mock fight with the alpha roo and me. Sometimes he loses control and hit my leg with full force. He is the...
My chickens find and eat frogs and lizards as well, I prefer them to feast on grasshoppers and locusts instead, obviously I have no say in what they want to catch.
Also witness my roosters swallowing small mice before, those T-Rex!
You have done a good job.
Some additional things that you can do:
1) provide her with some fine oyster shell on the side or give her calcium tablet.
2) give her gentle abdominal massage, but it must be done carefully to avoid breaking the egg internally, preferably right after the epsom salt...
