oh, i'm glad for your annie, and i went through the same thing
i think i posted it here before: my "matriarch" sex-link was killed by a neighbor's weiner-dog. not a peep from her other than, "i'm sorry," and "you BAD dog" (not a bad dog; he did what she allowed him to do). "he's never...
glad it's not just here as well!
i'd chalked it up to my two banties' and rooster's witnessing my sex-link being killed by a neighbor's dog. call me crazy, but they seemed a little skittish and down in the dumps after that. we had a really cool summer: normally i'd find the banties had scads...
house is paid for would LOVE to have a smaller place on an acre or two--will accept reasonable offer in cash or trade for a mobile home and generator
vehicles paid for.
i grow as many veggies/fruits as i can. what isn't eaten in-season is canned. if i find staples on sale (or at the...
I might have to give this a go. I have two banties that go broody like mad. My BR rooster and sex-link hen have been keeping company quite a little bit. Haven't seen any behavior I can hang my hat on, though she has been laying. BBs (broody banties) adopted her eggs. Great! I marked them...
Quick update on Oliver. He is fine and dandy. This was taken this morning:
He still goes for rides in my rig. He is allowed out by himself. The head chook (Cleo) bullies him. He will scoot if he sees her. The kitties give him wide berth. The other chickens have tormented those poor cats...

Sorry to hijack the thread (and BTW, your dates and pics are almost identical to mine, and mine are 6weeks 4 days old today, and yes, looks like a cute roo to me,too!)...but aren't BRs known for being particularly sweet and docile? I hand feed my roo every day, and handle him--he comes...
I also use rocks.
The pretty river rocks worked last year; not this--chooks discovered they are smooth and easy to kick away. So now plants are surrounded with sharper rocks and stones. For new plants, I use scraps of chicken wire, or anything like laid down flat until I get the rocks...
The little man is doing very well! Today--on impulse--I put a towel on the passenger seat of my rig, set his parrot cage on top (the cage is for outside-time if hunter kitties are lurking), and took him with me when I made a quick run to the market.
He was not a bit frightened. He made tiny...
Well, my little BR, "Oliver" is, perhaps, only 6 weeks old. He is still peeping, though once I heard a brief "ACK!" while I was tidying his digs.
I have never had a BR rooster; just two hens. Both were sweet as could be (Sophie--my avatar--was sassy, but sweet).
When he is happy playing...
Thank you again
I had read conflicting information on the white spots on BR chicks: blurred, clear... Anyway, no matter. I had two BR hens, and they were just darling. Of course, the "little fella" is darling, too! He is so playful, and loves his special trips around the yard...
Ruh-roh.
You know...I had a young BR (the avatar), and when I saw the comb, I started suspecting. And when baby was picked on by one of the banties and the comb flushed, I REALLY suspected. Then this evening, when it was FINALLY bed-time, I noticed reddish coloring around the beak (waddles-to...
