Chicken losing feathers and screaming bloody murder!

Hi folks, thanks for all your help! A quick update: our molting bird is still pretty scraggly and keeping her distance from others (and especially us!) She's self-isolating for parts of the day in the neighbors yard when we let them free range, and she doesn't come back into the coop with the...

    Laying hen/roo

Collecting every day or two is fine. Three or more and you may start to see something growing. Of course even then you can still totally eat them... considered a delicacy in some parts! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(food)

Chicken losing feathers and screaming bloody murder!

Thanks everyone. She's back reunited with the rest of the flock this morning. She refused to let me inspect her too closely, but I don't see any evidence of lice or mites. Wowzers! I've raised chickens for 30 years and never had a molting hen react this dramatically!

    Broken leg

A while back I had a game hen who lost her leg. We think she may have got it caught in something and broke it struggling free. We amputated and she lived another several very happy years hopping about on her remaining leg!

One of my black stars (~15 months) has been losing a lot of feathers recently, with no obvious signs of trauma. We're in California, so it's not freezing, but all our other girls have their full plumage. Her behavior with the rest of the flock seems pretty normal, getting picked on a bit, but...

    Old English Game bantam mystery

Thanks folks! Yes, they are 9 years old and both are indeed hens -- they both looked the same up until a few months ago. My theory had been 'chicken menopause' or some kind of hormonal change, but I've raised chickens for 25+ years and never seen or heard anything like this before. Is anyone...

    Old English Game bantam mystery

Hi everyone, Hoping you can help with this mystery. We have two 9-year-old Old English Game bantam hens that we've raised since they were chicks. A few months ago, one of them started changing color and plumage, including much longer tail feathers. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she's...
