@cluckycharms...
thanks so much for your education!!
Now that you have pointed this out, I have seen the blastoderm numerous times while preparing to cook them and so now I know what I have been seeing so I do know that fertility is taking place.
"Chance" is the only roo and as far as the...
"Have you ever had any chicks hatch from a pairing with Chance the roo?"... Yes, last year she hatched 3 but only 1 survived but it came up missing.
"How many hens is he over?"....He has 9 ladies..
"Have you tried the crack test with any of these eggs IE: have you cracked open any freshly...
Thanks to all for your input. This forum truly is a wealth of knowledge.
After work I did take my favorite Buff off her nest and what a smell!!
I read somewhere on this forum about EGGTOPSIES or something like that and to puncture the large end (air pocket) but be careful about it...
One of my bufffs has been setting since 10-01-12 and as of this afternoon still no chicks.
What is disturbing is the terrible smell that I can actually smell outside coop.
Could she be setting on rotten eggs?
Thanks in advance on any advice.
Thanks sooooo much for all of the info.....I guess it is out of our hands now.
We will keep feeding as best we can, and keep her warm and cozy.
If she makes it through the night then maybe she has a chance.
Thanks all again.
Here is the latest.
I just found a bulge under her throat, it is soft to the touch and it is what I would call a distended abdomen in a human. I read on the FAQ before I posted here about a crop problems, etc. (not sure I know where the crop is)
Could this be the issue? Or could we be...
Ok, I did microwave a couple of yolks, pulverized them pretty, added a little pedialyte, with the infant vitamins (w/o Iron), and some plain Yogert and true enough it was a little thick so I diluted it with a little more Pedialyte and hummer water and Yogert. I think I remember somewhere that...

Will post results as it gets better!
Thanks so much for your prompt replies.
YOu mentioned the term "failing". Is that a term used to describe a particular condition or physical attitude of a young chick?

We just had our first brood and out of 5 eggs Lilly was sitting on only 2 managed to actually hatch. The first one we named Alpha and the second one Bittie.
After the first week it was obvious Alpha was a tad different than its sibling. Alpha seemed to want to sleep every time it got still...
Wow...thanks so much for these quick responses!
We have been throwing the scratch out when we visit and they love our visit. The only problem is I accuse my wife of throwing out too much as the next day we still have enough scratch for them to eat again.
Also, took an old fish stringer, the...
We are new in this great hobby and I just finished a book on raising chickens and this book never debated whether throwing feed on the ground for them to eat whenever they want or whether to install feeders whetherr hanging or wall mount.
Also, what is the best.....keeping feed available 24-7...
I have 5 Buff Orpingtons, 1- roo and 4 girls.
The roo has clean looking behind but 2 of the girls have kind of matted and dirty vent areas.
I have picked each one up and tried to spray the areas with flea and tick spray.
This hasn't produced any cleaner behinds. Can or should you give a...
we are new to this great past time but we have a problem. Our roo has been attacking only one of the hens.....not to mate, but actually has jumped on her and pecked her so badly that the back side of her head has a huge scab on it. We thought this would pass but this behaviour has persisted...
