    Housing free-range guineas for winter.

First of all I have to say that the dumbest thing I ever did was raise guinea chicks in my house this summer. I usually raise them at the barn. So I have guineas trying to get in the back door, messing up the decks, eating my flowers, digging up the lawn, peering in the windows following me as...

Where should I house my guineas?

They have to be protected from predators, so an open barn, even with high rafters, might be an invitation for a free meal. I would coop them and figure out the chickens later.

    So, if I build a 4x10' chicken tractor, add eight pullets . . .

My assessment of the situation is that there are no other options, except to let them free-range, which in my book means "put them out for the local predators' dinner". It is OK to have a stationary pen -I toss hay on the floor and throw in weeds, kitchen scraps or garden vegetables every day...

STRANGE ANIMALS AS PETS -- ANYONE HAVE ANY?

That is one cute kid you have there.

en Behavior-Can they tell which eggs are theirs?

Maybe an odd question because I know people stick extra eggs under hens to hatch. Background: I had two hens on same nest. One hen was a bad mom, so I removed her. The remaining hen only hatched out half the eggs and abandoned the rest. I am hatching these out and the chicks are a different...

    Weak day-old chick. Need encouragement/advise

Julie, there is a post from the moderator that said what was going on sounded natural, but I don't know the situation of your chick. I kept mine warm and held it in a cupped hand against my chest a lot, gave it drops of water, some with tiny amounts of sugar and mixed with the finest tiny...

    Weak day-old chick. Need encouragement/advise

Thank you! (taking a bow). I'd like to take credit, BUT, actually, this chick made it from egg to fluff-hood thanks to the forum

    Weak day-old chick. Need encouragement/advise

An Update: I am happy to report that the chick has started pecking at food. Every hour he improves. I never realized how traumatic hatching is for chicks. I thought they popped out, dried off and went off to chase bugs. Another thing that surprised me was how sparse their feathers look and how...

    Weak day-old chick. Need encouragement/advise

You don't know how much your post means to me. I've been worrying quite a bit. He/she is the only new chick, but he had a visit from his sibling - a four day old runt - earlier today. As soon as he is "up and running" I'll bring the sib back. It was just too active for him, although it could...

    Weak day-old chick. Need encouragement/advise

I decided to hatch out the eggs my hen deserted using the electric skillet method. Within 10 minutes one little chick pecked a hole in its egg and eventually got out the egg over a five hour period with help. I knew I shouldn't help, but I was afraid it would die if I left it overnight - the...

    snake protection?

My understanding is that Black snakes keep Copperheads away, so with that in mind, they don't look all that bad to me. But I'm not exactly thrilled when I have to "do" things with them. It's hard to get a 5' snake on a shovel....

Miniature hens-is there such a thing?

Has anyone tried breeding for very small chickens? I am just wondering because my Duckwing Bantams are very small and I am thinking of putting the smallest hen and rooster together to see if I can breed down to an even smaller bird. Firgures ... I already have mini-horses If I can scale down...

    snake protection?

I've had black snakes in the coop several times. I kept finding dead chickens that looked healthy. I think they were getting suffocated but were too big to swallow. Then chicks started disappearing. It suddenly dawned on me that there had been a snake in the coop. As I was inside the coop...

    Mean Mother Hen

Thanks! I hate having a bad hen. Wonder what Freud would say. The good Momma is a delight. She is letting me hang out with her new family and scratch her under the chin while the babies climb on my hand. This is very unusual, but she seems perfectly healthy. Now on to the coop design page to...
