Pine straw in nest boxes? As litter? In the run?

Do I put the pine straw (pine needles as we call them in Aus) in the coop/run green, or do I have to dry them out first?

Ended Official BYC Contest—Post Your Best (Worst) Chicken Molt Pictures—Fall/Winter 2013

We're heading into Summer right now in Australia, and the Winter doesn't really get cold enough for my lay-dees to do a proper molt :-( But this Winter was a little colder than usual, and one of my girls (Henny Penny Chicken Wing) had a pretty good try - check her out: Not that she has a...

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi 13Chooks - welcome! I live in suburban Melbourne, and don't often post on this website, but often read this Aussie thread - it's very informative, as well as entertaining! Living inner city, I'm a bit of a weirdo that I have any chooks at all, but we have 2 (the limit in our area). We're...

Welcome princesschooky! The nickname I gave my cat before I ever had chooks is "chooky"! He's now 13, and I still call him that - it doesn't seem to confuse the lay-dees too much!

Comment by 'City Lay-Dee' in article 'Interesting Facts About Chicken Eggs'

Great article, cheers mate! Just wondering - do you know if shell-less eggs are ok to eat? When I occasionally get them, I have been giving them to my cat, and he doesn't seem to mind (and he will very quickly turn his nose up at anything he think might be off)...

Chooks in St Kilda! Inner city Melbourne, Australia

Hi Ange H! Whereabouts are you exactly? My soon-to-be in-laws are in and around Newcastle (Adamstown & Standford Merthyr), and they have chooks! I spend a fair bit of time there, and also in Lemon Tree Passage... People who DON'T talk to animals are WEIRD - why wouldn't you? They're SUCH good...

I'm in inner-city Melbourne! I'm new to BYC, and love to hear from any other Aussies - especially anyone in Victoria!

Things that I have said to my chickens

"No, I don't want to root you!" (translation for non-Aussies, to root = Aussie slang meaning to have intercourse!!) Our girls are always running up to us, and squatting down, ready to be mounted as if we humans are roosters! Too funny!!

Chooks in St Kilda! Inner city Melbourne, Australia

G'day! I'm getting the impression from the neighbours that we're pretty unusual in that we've got backyard chickens (or chooks, as we call them) in our backyard, in the inner city bayside Melbourne suburb of St Kilda. Are there many Aussies on this site? Does anyone know of anyone in my area who...
