As a general answer, unless a kitten is raised around chickens it is a natural behavioral response to stalk and kill birds, mice, rabbits, whatever. I'm not familiar with training a cat to go against their instincts. Could be possible. I have no idea. I do know that free range is a real...
I've heard, but not tried yet, that adding a tsp. of baking soda to the water makes them easier to peel. I also heard the same thing about vinegar, and I have tried that with fair results. Fresh eggs seem to stick no matter what for me. They need to be a week to 10 days old.
The ice water trick...
We live in an agriculturally zoned neighborhood. I also have 7 Dachshunds. Next door they have a dog kennel boardering our property as well as rabbit hutches. My dogs went nuts until they put up a visual barrier. Even though Dachshunds are scent dogs, the barrier was a great help.
Now, if they...
That's a garter snake, very benign, and appears to be a pretty good size. Wow! There are several types in Pa. but there ends my input. Like the site fisherlady. Thanks!
Geez Nancy, I sure wish I could take him. I'd love to have an Orpington. It's just too far for me. I live in Shippensburg, Pa.
Good luck finding a home for the little guy.
Really!!!???,
Finally, a neighbor! I'm in Shippensburg. I just now found your post:0) I'm thinking of free ranging some Orpington's. I want to see and enjoy my chickens running around the yard. Problem is I have a barn cat that loves to eat all my song birds and any babies that are on the...
What would you suggest for a breed or breeds? I want something gentle, colorful, interesting, and big enough to challenge a couple of scaredy barn cats. I'm thinking a rooster and maybe 6 or so hens.
Ladies, I appreciate the input. I am thinking of opening the back of the barn again so they have a roosting spot and a place to lay eggs. With 2 acres I'd have to have an egg hunt every day without it. Not to say they'll actually use it for eggs but better than nothing.
BTW, our neighbors...
Thank you for your input. Our neighbor has chickens and they are always going all over the neighborhood, except for our yard. We have Dachshunds and they use a dog door that allows them to go out into a large fenced in area. The chickens would have to go all the way around to get to our bird...
I would like to free range chickens in our yard. We have 2 acres but lots of predators around. Is there a breed that is gentle, docile to work with but a formidable challenge for a cat or fox? Or is that an unrealistic question?
