He is eating Dumor layer pellets with the other hens. I have had him since last summer, about 4 months. I think he is only about a year old but I really don't know for sure. Sometimes I give the chickens apples or blueberries or tomatoes or cracked corn as a treat.
Mr. Rooster's feet seem to be okay. They are not real red right now and there was no broken skin or hard lumps or scratches or anything that I thought looked wrong. I guess it is just hormones.
I am beginning to think my Orpington Buff Rooster has a foot problem. His feet and legs are bright pink and it looks almost like an angry red when exposed to moisture in the environment, like morning dew or rain. He sometimes stumbles too and is unable to catch the hens. I have two Orpington...
There are measures one can take to minimize the fly populations in and around horse pastures. I have two horses and have very few problems with flies. I regularly mow the pastures and scatter the manure to dry in the sun with the mower. Flies need a moist environment to multiply. My two horses...
I am not that good with computers. I can not provide a link. However just put Do chickens who eat flies have salmonella? on the search line of your computer and you will probably come up with lots of places which verify what I have said.
I have read that chicken meat and eggs contain salmonella because the chickens were eating flies. I do not think it is a good idea to encourage fly eating. It would be better to eliminate the fly problem some other way.
I have read scientific reports that the reason chicken meat or eggs may carry salmonella is because the hens have been eating flies. I personally do all I can to eliminate flies from my chicken coop.
I just bought some valbazen 11.36%. It came with instructions for use on adult cats and dogs. I bought it for chickens and have not used any yet. But it specified 1 cc per 10 pounds of body weight for dogs and cats. It says not to use it on pregnant animals because it may cause birth defects. It...
I wonder would it be better to divide a 10 x 20 foot enclosure into two adjoining 10 x 10 pens or get another 10 x 10 x 6 kennel and put it out of sight of the rooster? I don't want to drive the rooster crazy by keeping the hens within sight but out of touch on the other side of a chain link...
I do not think the rooster is trying to hurt the hen. He is a big fella and looks like he is trying to get balanced on the hen's back by gripping onto her back feathers and the feathers on her head. He probably does not realize his own strength. Oh well, two chicken coops with one chicken in...
I plan on getting back in touch with the woman who sold me the pair and find out more on how long they were together. I guess I can keep more pullets in the enclosure with the hen I already have. although I plan on keeping her by herself until her poopy vent problem clears up so that might not...
Just joined. I bought what I was told was a breeding pair of Buff Orpington Buffs but am questioning the condition of the hen. Her back and wings and back of her head have been picked bare of feathers. She has not layed a single egg the whole time I have had her. Only two days though. I am...
