Sapphire gem or Plymouth blue rock

The biggest difference to tell them apart is in the rooster. The sapphire blue Plymouth rock has a "lace" look around his neck and back. The sapphire gems rooster has a solid shiny black neck and back. Also from what I understand a true sapphire gem has dark face and legs. Here are my sapphire...

2 weeks and 11 weeks co- existing

This is the reason for wanting to get the chick in with the older chicks. Again my question was about integrating the 2 ages together. I live in Florida so chicks can thrive with out a heat lamp pretty quickly as our temps dont drop low at night. 1. Will a cage for the chick for protection be...

2 weeks and 11 weeks co- existing

I have older chicks out in my grow out coop. However my daughter wants to keep a 2 week old chick. Once the chick doesnt need the heat source anymore I was considering putting her in a small cage in my grow out coop with older chicks. I worry about the young chick being alone right now and I...

    Florida coop design help

I live in Florida and mine are more run and small coop. Also ours was built in the shade due to the hot temps. The shade keeps the chickens much cooler and I havent noticed my birds "panting" during the hot months unless they are laying an egg. We are currently adding on to our coop and changing...

Do you find it necessary to have a chicken first aid kit on hand

I am questioning whether it is necessary to buy all the medicines we may or may not need beforehand. I did this for my dog and 2 years later we still havent taken anything out for the dog. Did remove the alchohol to use since you cant find any in the stores so that is a plus!😉 However I do...

Free Ranging Close To Someone Else's Free Ranging Flock

My neighbors roos try to come over at least once a week. My roo chases them back home. But my roo is an adult and knows his property line. If I was in your position I might try just fencing in a part of your yard that you want them to "free range" in. Sounds like his roos want to add your hens...

Dry spot on comb of my rooster

No mites or lice. I have checked for that and clean the coop regularly. My 2 older hens try to be sassy with him though.

Dry spot on comb of my rooster

I have seen one of my hens pecking at his comb but he was allowing her to do it so I just assumed she was cleaning it up.

Dry spot on comb of my rooster

My rooster has gotten this dry area on his comb closer to his hair line. Is this something I should worry about? I have searched diseases and none look quite like what he has going on. The hens do not have this at all. He has not changed behaviour or acting any different. I did notice that my...

Chick hatched still attached to umbilical cord? HELP!

I am so grateful for all of the help in here. I just had the same thing and I was not sure if I should intervene or not. Unfortunately my chick is completely dry and is still dragging around half its egg due to "umbilical cord" still being attached.

    Handling a rooster

I am wanting to give my rooster a good look over. He has a white dry patch on his comb close to his head. Should I wait til he is sleeping? How do I need to handle him? He is friendly enough but doesn't like to be picked up and doesn't like his hens to be picked up! I dont want to turn my roo...

    Hello! Happy to be here

Welcome! I am also fairly new! We have had our chickens for a yr now. I wish I would have known sooner about chickens and what joy they bring to your life. I sit and just watch them at times and you can really see their personalities shine. We have 1 roo and 5 hens all believed to be sapphire...

    In demand chicken breeds

I personally have been looking for cream legbar chickens. 1. They are beautiful and upon research seem to be a more friendly chicken 2. Produces blue eggs- right now my chickens will lay pinkish, brown and chocolate. 3. I think I am addicted to chickens.

    Introducing to flock

Attached is a picture showing how friendly and curious our buff rock chicks are. As soon as we open the door they come to greet us. They love their belly's rubbed. The other chicks stay towards the back away from us.

    Introducing to flock

I have 5 hens and a roo (I believe to be saphire gems). I also have 2 welsummer, 2 sex link and 5 buff rock chicks. At what age do you think I can start introducing the chicks to the rest of the flock? They are only 2 & 3 weeks old right now so I still have plenty of time. None of my hens are...
