    Advice on building DIY incubator

Whelp, that one already hatched. I saw the egg was a little open so I had to look in closer and I accidentally scared the chick and it literally jumped out of the egg shell 😱 .... It seems healthy though and very active already and very noisy.. chirping like crazy. I think it's trying to get...

    Advice on building DIY incubator

Short update for people that might be curious along the line. This is day 20, 2 days in "lockdown". From the 6 eggs I candled on day 18, I threw one out which was clearly not fertile (still had a yolk, no veins visible), then for the other 5 I compared with some of the guides here on how they...

    FIEM Incubator problems

From my understanding those values are completely fine. Fluctuations aren't necessarily bad. Hotter temperatures will cause the eggs to develop faster than colder temperatures, that can negatively impact the development.. but.. if it hasn't gone above 39C, I don't think there should be too many...

    Humidity went down overnight

What stage are you at? First 18 days humidity between 20-40% is completely fine. There's a thing like "dry incubating" that doesn't demand much humidity at all. The last 3 days is key though. Lockdown phase you have to have humidity at 60%+. I've also read a study that misting the eggs with a...

Humidity - How To Measure It Without ANY Tool

We cant guess the humidity, it also differs if your outside humidity is high or low. Generally though you can do a dry run for the first 18 days, 25%-40% humidity is fine for example. You can just add a little bit of water each time. Last 3 days is vital to have high humidity though, 60%+

    Tips, anyone?

From my experience, cats never do anything to adult chickens and are relatively calm next to them. I guess they're just too big. But they will absolutely chase down chicks, predator drive and all that.

Really worried day 24 no movement

What was the temperature and humidity at? If low temp, they might take longer to hatch, 3 days longer sounds a bit of a stretch though. Did you increase the humidity in the final days? It should be 60%+

    Tips, anyone?

I would be careful but definitely introduce them slowly and close to you, so they know they belong to you. Some animals can be unpredictable though, so be careful. It also helps if you have a rooster, I knew a neighbors dog who would easily chase and chew up hens, but as soon as there was a...

When can the chicks inside eggs hear / make sounds?

Couldn't find a clear answer so far, eggs due to hatch sometime next week... curious about the developing time and when they are able to hear and make sounds themselves? Is this close to hatching time (last 3 days) or even earlier? In nature the hen "talks" to the chicks and this will assist...

Is guessing the chicken sex by looking at eggs size real? If yes, tell me the outcomes of the following eggs.

Yea the only study I read that might have some value is that the higher the incubation temperature, the more chance of roosters developing, lower temps more chance of hens. But that study was also inconclusive at best.

Is guessing the chicken sex by looking at eggs size real? If yes, tell me the outcomes of the following eggs.

From what I read online (and what other said): No. The bigger the egg, the older the chicken. Old chickens lay bigger eggs, young chickens smaller. And then there's also the thing about different chicken species having different sizes... Whether it's a hen or rooster is only determined at the...

Should I count my losses now

In that pic it does look like there are veins growing though

    Incubator failure

I would consider assisting with the hatch, there's a topic/guide here somewhere

    Humidity percentage differences

Tough call, lol. Analog hygrometers have a reputation for being inaccurate, then again.. the digital one you have there is quite cheap and has tons of reports of being inaccurate as well. But humidity % in the ballpark of what those two show should be perfect for lockdown.

    Incubator failure

Like the other said, such temperature drops aren't gonna kill em (in fact I read some study that was done that on lockdown it's better to have the temperature slightly lower at 98F then keep it at 99.5F, apparently better hatch rates). I think just bad luck, not all the eggs will make it.
