    Flakey skin!

Thanks all! No rooster in my flock, all hens. And none of the others have this. The areas never really change like molting...no new feather growth. As a matter of fact the areas are nearly bald, grayish in color, and the skin is flaking. I would think if she were molting it wouldn't have stayed...

    Flakey skin!

Hi all. I'm resurrecting this post as I need some help on treating one of my hens. What you see below is on the top of both her wings. The picture does not show how dry and flaky her skin is. It's been like this for 5-6 months and contained to her "shouders", so I'm fairly certain she's not...

    Goat proof chicken feeder, SUCCESS!!!!

Pop hole? Is this something you made to help keep the goats out? If so, I would appreciate a picture. Like you, I would like to go back to regular feeders without the cages. I don't think the girls are a big fan of them.

    Goat proof chicken feeder, SUCCESS!!!!

We are using the caged-feeders (shown in the original post to this thread) and it has helped (ours have lids so no entry from the top). Two of my three goats don't even bother trying anymore. But one, and there always has to be one, has learned he can stick his tongue through the little square...

    Goat proof chicken feeder, SUCCESS!!!!

We've built one of these and plan to put it to use starting tomorrow. I will post back on how it works, although my goat boys are only 8 weeks old so they may not be the best test subjects. Nevertheless, I believe this has to be better than anything I have tried thus far!!

    Goat proof chicken feeder, SUCCESS!!!!

Thank you so much, Andiexb, for your post and pictures!! I have three 8 week-old nigerian dwarfs and have been tirelessly trying to figure out a way to keep them out of my chicken feed. I was awake at 2 am this morning and had thought of something like this but my idea was no where complete. I...

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

Hi all. Thanks for all the great advice!! I will be biting the bullet this year and not provide heat to my girls. I have in the past on really bitter cold nights but will not any more after watching my neighbors coop burn to the ground just a few weeks ago. They had a heat lamp in their coop...

Worms & Respiratory Disease - Rooster Booster Worked!!!

One question for you, dawg53, can my little 10 week-old chicks have the Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer? All my chickens share water and I wasn't sure if it would be too much for younger chicks.

    Merging my flock

Actually, my older ones are 18 months old, not 18 weeks, so all are laying (except for my ornamental breed!). A couple of the older ones are just starting to molt for the first time so the additional protein may be good for them (read that on one of the sponsored articles on this site). I will...

I will definitely be on the look out for a reappearance. Keeping my fingers crossed that they don't come back. :)

Worms & Respiratory Disease - Rooster Booster Worked!!!

By the way, here is the website where I confirmed that what I was seeing was tapeworms and also how to treat worms in chickens, in general. I preferred an all-natural approach and that is why I tried the Verm-X. http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Worming_Poultry.html

Worms & Respiratory Disease - Rooster Booster Worked!!!

Have you tried Verm-X, dawg53? The reason I ask is because that is the only thing I have changed in my chickens regimen and the tapeworm segments are no longer being discarded in their waste like before. The product is advertised as killing intestinal parasites and keeping intestinal health...
