I have 6 hens over 1 year, all laying with no problems. There's also one baby, about 10 weeks. Yesterday, we found 2 eggs laid on the futon! One was normal, the other with no shell. We don't know who did it, and I don't know why my older girls would lay a shelless egg? It was normal...
I agree that mamma knows best. Babies raised by real mothers are remarkably tolerant to chilly temperatures. Does this mean they're also more resistant to disease? Maybe....I don't know!
My silkie just raised a brood on medicated feed, and that's what I'd recommend for safety's sake.
If...
Oh it's fun to set up a brooder. You can set it up in the coop and it'll work just fine if you keep a couple things in mind. ( My silkie just raised a brood of 5 in the run with the other big girls, and it went well. )
Wire dog pens work great for allowing chicks a way to go in and out of the...
Thanks. I should mention, thier run is 12'x6' with a 4' x6' coop attached. They free range daily. I wonder if it could do any good to try a little disipline when I see it. Say a well aimed super soaker?!
Can we train chickens not to bully?!!
I've got a silkie with an 8 week old she raised after going broody. They are together with 5 standards. A couple of them chase the silkie around sometimes, and the young one seems afraid of them. There isn't any pecking, and for the most part it's not a huge problem, but I hate to see it and...
My very broody silkie is raising her first adopted brood. Will this typically break a broody SILKIE? I know others pray for broodies. I want her eggs.
I should also mention, I'm keeping one of the babies. Only on the hope that it'll be a companion to her in our small flock of 7. The...
Wow! that's so interesting. My girls were pecking ( not eating ) an occasional egg. At the time, I was mixing oyster shell in the feed. Now it's available on the side. I think they eat more this way, as thier shells are stronger, and no more poked eggs! They also have wooden eggs in the...
HHmmmm....don't know. I have one silkie, and she was laying every day until she went broody. I wonder if yours just need more settling in time, and then they'll get going again.
I have the same picture in my backyard!! ( minus the bunny. ) Your silkie mamma looks exactly like mine! Mine is Dolly. We now call her Dolly Mamma. She adopted 5 babies of mixed breeds and it's been nothing but adorable love.
What's your story?
I need to put my 5 week olds with my older hens and all on the same feed. Someone suggested a game hen feed, but I can't remember exactly what kind.
Anyone know?
Thanks!

How to identify them from what? Chickens? You do realize Silkies are not true chickens don't you? First off they have black skin. Second they come out of their skins at night when your sleeping and contact the mother ship. Also you have to wear tin foil hats so they can't read your...
I forget.......when do chicks go to a grower? I'll be glad when I don't have to worry about my big girls getting into the medicated starter. They free range all day, and stay out of the broody area for the most part, but I still have to watch for this!
Also, my 4 week olds may eventually find...
My little silkie sat on wooden eggs for about a month. I got some chicks from the feed store and slipped them under her after her bedtime with great success. They're about 31/2 weeks now and it's all love.
