    what is the best knife.

I second the Havalon. I use a Havalon Piranta. I've processed almost 200 birds, several goats, and a lamb with that knife. Quick, easy, and efficient. Gets the job done for sure.

    Show off your roosters

This is my Black Orpington, Sue. He is at least 6 years old, although I think he may be older. Everyone who sees him remarks about how big he is. He is very calm and well behaved. He is the only chicken I have that you can walk up to and pick up without fuss. My kids play in the yard and he has...

    Shipped Chicks and Avian Influenza

Hello! I have what may be a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer else where. I have an order of chicks coming in the beginning of July from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. I emailed them and asked it they had any out breaks in their flocks or flocks near them and they said no and that...

    What breed?

I got this girl from a Cackle Hatchery Surprise. Can anyone help me figure out her breed? She is completely unlike any other chicken I've ever owned. She has a tiny head, and a strange cluck that sounds more like a croak. She is super flighty! More so than my Leghorns even. Almost impossible to...

    What breed might theses be?

Part of a Cackle Hatchery surprise. Any idea what these are? They are very active and flighty, single comb. I think there might be two breeds, as some have yellow legs and some have gray legs. Thanks!

    Fat chick??

It's hard to exercise a chick. You can't exactly put them on a leash. I would take him outside to free range as often as possible. He'll walk around and forage. If you can, get him a non-meat bird friend to play with, that might encourage him to be more active. Maybe add some branches or wood...

    Fat chick??

That does look like a Cornish X, in which case, there is not much you can do to keep him small. They are meant to grow to 6-8 pounds in 8 weeks. If you want to try to keep him for longer than that, you should fore sure try to restrict his feed and get him as much exercise as possible. People...

Simple, home made, natural chick starter and feed

Hello! Welcome to BYC! The protein percentage for chick starter is %18. The reason feed recipes are so complicated is because they need specific nutrition. While I'm sure grown chickens with lots of room to range would be okay with getting a little of this and a little of that so long as...

    Broody Hen Questions

I went out tonight to lock everybody up and Mama and baby were on the roost together. I guess I don't have to worry about them much anymore.
