Yes, they need to be lower than the roosting bars or they will sleep in them and that gets messy. I have mine around that height, it may be a little higher, so I have a perching bar in front of it so they can hop up and climb in. they seem to like the arrangement.

Hi, no I don't sell pullets. I just got my Roo Handsome Rob to help with our feline predator and occasional hawk or eagle issues. I don't intend to hatch any out but who know's, I might get ambitious and try it. He is a Wellsummer and I got him in case I decide to breed for olive eggs. I have an EE hen who lays light green eggs and one who lays blue eggs. Also have two 18 week EE pullets awaiting their egg color. Have Australorps, Wellsummers, a Buff Orpington, EE's, Black sex link, Speckled sussex and a Red Comet (the boss). I din't insulate my coop because my flock is well suited to the cold. They did just fine last year (which was my first time with chickens), I did supplement with occasional heat when the night dropped below -20, but that wasn't very often. I've read that as long as there is proper ventilation, the cold is not a problem. We will start working on our run later this summer. Just finished building the new 8x8 coop and they love it. My ladies and gentleman are very spoiled and I think its great! Enjoy working on your run, post pics if you have them.
Well I'm thinking that ours will do great through the winters..... we went to town today and got all the wood so we can start on the run... we are going to have electricity in the hen house, so we will be able to plug a light in when needed... I'm wondering where everyone buys the hardware cloth, we want 1/4" by 48" by 100'... and I'm not sure what Guage we need.... if anyone here knows, please let me know. ...

We bought a 4' tall approx 300 ft long roll of 1x2 hardware cloth at ACE Hardware because they offer a military discount. Was for rabbit cages, but now it will be used for the birds. I wish we had a TSC in Missoula...

I went to TSC and searched for 1/4" hardware cloth and it showed that they didn't even carry it... but I will call them tomorrow and ask if they carry it and get a price... so far, looking everywhere, Amazon Prime is the best price... NO shipping charges... so I'm thinking that I'll just order it.... I'm kind of bumbed because today we did a bit of leveling of the dirt and dug 5 holes... the last hole has a HUGE rock, so we're only going to be able to,make the run 16' long... it just looks so small to me... I guess I'll just be letting them out a lot... today we got worms for them, they loved them!

Oh, I have a question.... my 4 hens that are 8 weeks old, we took their water out and hung a bucket up with 4 nipples... they all seem to be good, but I never see them drinking out of the nipples... I should think they would be dead by now if they weren't drinking water, right? Tomorrow we are going to take the 5 week olds water out and hang a bucket with 4 nipples on it... they keep tipping their water over...
has anybody had a problem with them learning to us the nipples?
And by the way, those feeders I bought are great! NO food waste...
well I hope everyone is fairing the heat...

Have never had a problem with the chicks using the nipples. I picked up my half grown chicks at night from the lady who was taking care of them until I got back from Arizona. When I checked them at 7 am they were all getting drinks. When the neighbors and I could all free range our girls (before the foxes came) the neighbor's chickens even got drinks from the nipple waterers at my place. It a natural behavior for them to poke at something red.

So far we are handling the heat. This old house stays cool for most of the day. It gets a bit warm in early evening. Sunday will be the test as it's going to be a scorcher. I may miss my AC then.
