I did eggtopsies. Only 2 of 34 progressed past about day 12. That was about the time of our first power outage. Glad I didn't hold out hope any longer. Live, Learn and Move on.
Today is day 25 for my chicken eggs. We experienced 3 power outages in the first 21 days. Their lowest recorded temp being 74°F. Do you think this would be enough to kill them? The shells are to thick and dark to see thru and we water candled but didn't get results. Should I toss them and start...
It sounds like you already got everything figured out. Main points to remember when building... Make it easy for you to clean, make sure you can access the chicken roosting area. If you have to care for a sick hen it is easy to get them when they are sleeping. Have room to keep food and water...
Yes they will poop right in there. I am currently having that problem. We end up with very dirty eggs because of it. I say rearrange those perches. Make it easier on yourself later.
The one that we looked at had a remote control. Try having supervised time with the chickens and see how he does. If he gets that look in his eye...( I'm sure you know the Shepherd stare I'm talking about) give him a little shock. He'll eventually associate the chickens with a bad sensation and...
So sorry to hear about your hens. We also have a Shepherd and he has on occasion been aggressive. We try to reward him when he is calm around the chickens. Our Vet said that theyhave a hearding and protection instinct that can take over and cause problems. The Vet suggested a training shock...
We started off with 3 New Hampshire pullets, and 3 Easter Eggers. Our neighbor used to have chickens and something happened to their flock. The barred rock hen in this pic was the only one left of the neighbor's flock. When our chicks were big enough to be moved outside last spring, she came...
Our flock free ranges almost every day from daylight till dark. Our Rooster has every opportunity to find grit or eat what I provide. He still eats oyster shell. After reading the OP and responses I will be changing my food as well. Thanks everyone for all the good info!
It depends on how big the chicken tractor is. Obviously, if they begin pecking and hurting eachother they need more room. As long as they have shade and plenty of water during hot days and shelter when it rains... they would do fine in a tractor all summer.
Hopefully he has calmed down. If he is still agressive, try and make yourself the top rooster. Knock him down a peg. My rooster was being a jerk and everytime I caught him acting that way I would chase him down... tackle if I had too. I would carry him around with me for at least 10 minutes. He...
