    I rescued this hen from a “second hand” advertisement. She came with a homemade coop which was too small. She’d been kept by herself for 5 months and was only let out of that ”coop” when the father remembered to lift it up so she could get out. They were completely unaware of chicken care...

    Great article and the visuals helped me a lot. I will probably continue with my hybrid system since I spot clean the coop while scooping the ”gifts” left by my 5 dogs. i love that I can come beck to this when my schedule changes :) Thank you for taking the time to write it.

    I live within city limits in Northern California. I can legally have 4 hens, but roosters are prohibited.

    I’m also reluctant to lock her up as she and the roosters have spent most of their lives in small runs with no sunlight. She deserves her freedom. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area the weather is almost never a problem, so I’m not in a hurry 😌
