    Euthanasia Information

My grandmother used to make "leg holders" similar to the longer ones she would catch them with but had them looped around the metal clothes line all in a row. She would catch the chickens hook their feet in the wire holder and let them hang upside down for a few minutes. They didn't struggle and...

    Right BB Gun

Your local Walmart has several nice but cheap CO2 powered BB gun pistols that should do the trick. If Mass does not allow them in Walmart, the ones here in Rhode Island do (short drive). for about $50 for the BB gun, $12 for a box of CO2 cartridges and then $7 or $8 for a big jar of BBs and you...

    Best animals for hawk protection

You could try stringing heavy fishing line (20 or 30 pound test) across the area, high enough where it's out of the way as you walk around. Just random strings of line can deter hawks as they "learn" there is some sort of invisible defense that their wings hit as they try to swoop in. They wont...

    Hemp bedding?

I just completed a test, I used hemp bedding for a month now and my chickens refuse to eat anything but Nachos and gas station Chili dogs. They always have the "munchies" but they are "way cool" and "so relaxed". My rooster has stopped crowing at sunrise, (sleeps till noon now) when he wakes up...

    Moving day

Last night I did slowly kind of carry/walk/hop them up the ramp just before dark. I do have a LED bulb in the coop to entice them into the coop. I think it will take a few more days at least to train them. Yesterday all 9 of them were hand carried down and spent the entire day in the run...

    Moving day

I moved my 9 RI reds (9 weeks old) into the coop this past Friday. I kept them in the coop for the first couple days, yesterday I put them down in the 10 x 10 run. My thinking on this was I wanted them to "get used" to sleeping in the coop and to "impress" on them that the coop was Home, while...

    Nestling under pine woodchips

I have always been told that during the first week 90 degrees is fine, by week 2 you could drop to 85 degrees and then 5 degrees each following week. By week 5 or 6 they should be perfectly fine in your house without additional heat.

    Repeat pasty butt

That's what the farmer I bought my baby chicks from told me. I have 9 Rhode Island Red chicks that are 6 weeks old now, I have added 3 tablespoons of ACV to each gallon of their water from day 1 and have not seen any "pasty butt" or softer than normal poops.

    Repeat pasty butt

We add 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to each gallon of water to prevent pasty butt.
