Ah thank you- the boxes are 11 inches tall at their lowest (they have a slanted roof) and are 12 by 12 inches at the bottom.
The boxes DO have a lip at the top of the entrance- so that image from the inside of the coop does make them look significantly shorter than they are on the inside. I...
Hello everyone!
I am a fairly new chicken keeper- this is my first year keeping them as an adult, so definitely still learning about what is normal etc. A few of our pullets (day old chicks arrived end of May, they are Sapphire Splash from TSC) started to lay on Oct. 20, but very few are ending...
I can’t believe it- not a half hour later and Cruella popped an egg out! Amazing day in the coop!!!
This pic is the 2 lovely ladies sharing their eggs with us today.
Finally! This was my first time raising day old chicks and I’m so glad we did it- our 7 ladies are sweet as can be and that just makes caring for them so easy. The chicks arrived May 28, all “Sapphire Splash” from Hoover’s via TSC.
Rickets laid it near the nest box, so I guess she gets points...
OK, it looks like this is the most cooperation we're getting for now. This is pretty acurate to how she looks to my eyes. It is almost like the "splashes" from the feathers are continuing on the skin. (I am pretty new to chicken keeping so not quite sure how coloring actually works)
From what I’ve seen, they certainly could be sapphire splashes. Most of mine have yellow legs, but I have one that has mottled yellow/dark legs- I could try to get a pic of her legs if you like (of course she’s my most skittish bird). I wouldn’t be surprised if one had completely dark legs...
Thanks! I am very proud of them (first time raising birds from day old chicks). I had originally wanted Sapphire Gems, but I am really glad to have the splashes- they are easier to tell apart!
I'll update this thread when they start to lay for those interested in info on this breed!
Hello! Those sure look like Sapphire Gems. From Sapphire Gem parents, you should get black or splash coloring as you described. To get the "blue" coloring, you would need to cross an all black with a splash, at least that's my understanding from what I have read.
I have a few sapphire splash chicks from TSC- I am very excited about them! I was wondering if anyone had pictures of adult sapphire splashes they had purchased from Hoover’s or TSC?
I am starting out with Sapphire Splash chicks! They should arrive in a few weeks. I read way too much about different breeds and then of course my first choices were not available. We really wanted to start with some great layers and see where we go from there.
