    Lethargic silkie hen

Thanks so much. I just asked my mom to grab some vitamin E. I’ll try the eggs and wet feed too. And yes it was a silkie roo. He’s the same age and very hormonal. He wants to mate the hens and keeps grabbing hold of their heads and doing the dance —while facing them instead of climbing on their...

    Lethargic silkie hen

Thanks for the reply! She’s currently on my lap. Our 6 month old rooster has been aggressive with her. He pecked her on the head twice today and yanked feathers out. I’ve already made a bed for her and will keep her with me. She’s currently calm and sleepy, but if she gets startled, she tries to...

    Lethargic silkie hen

I have a six month old silkie hen who laid her first egg this am. I noticed her just laying in the yard on her side. Her neck looked unnaturally tipped back. She can’t seem to hold it up or stand. She almost seems to be having seizures. She just jumped up and fell on her side and liquid came...

    Rooster Acting Up

Thanks. I don't let my son out there by himself anymore if the rooster is out. He only goes out to that yard if the roo is locked up or a grownup with a big stick is nearby. He hasn't hurt us, but I never turn my back on him. He likes to sneak up, pretending to peck the ground, and then goes for...

    Rooster Acting Up

We have three sets of chickens that we got at different times, and they are all in different coops next to each other. Set 1: Roo and (4) hens- aged 1 year. Set 2: six-month old Easter egger hens, and Set 3: four four-month old silkies - sex undetermined. The 1-year old group and Easter egger...

    Silkies - girls or boys?

Hi there! We have 4 silkies, all born on November 1. One white, one black and two gray. We're wondering what their gender is and hope you can help. You've always been right before. :) Sorry for the mess. These were the best pics we could get since they won't stay still. Fancy (white) Loki...

    Bullied Hen and Attacking Rooster

We have four hens and a roo - all 8 months old and barnyard mixes. They share a coop and run intended for 8 chickens so they have lots of space. We've also been letting them out of the coop during the day to free range. We don't pet them or hand feed them, and we mostly keep our distance, though...

    Breed and gender?

Yay! I'm so, so relieved they are both pullets. And if Pepe ends up being an Easter Egger even better. Thank you @EmmaRainboe and @Quarterhorses1

    Breed and gender?

Okay, so my mom had four hens and a rooster. You all helped identify them as backyard mixes. On Oct 7, my mom also bought chicks at a local feedstore. I'm not sure how old they were, but I took the attached pic (see babies). The older pics are from today. I called the feed store and they don't...

    Skittish Hen

Thanks for the link! I'm browsing through "clutter" pictures now for ideas. We'll give it a try. This will be helpful when we're ready to integrate our new chicks too. Very helpful!

    Skittish Hen

Also, the inside has no clutter. Just 4 laying boxes to each side, a clear middle, and the roost up top. We have a bit of nesting material in there for the hens to scratch around, but it's a thin layer.

    Skittish Hen

Here you go. My brother built it. Don't mind the water that's down. That happened when we got hit by the Santa Ana winds yesterday morning. The wire snapped and we have to replace it. The chickens can go under the coop, inside it, or hang out outside.

    Skittish Hen

Hi All! First off, thanks for the community. I've been stalking posts for a bit before finally joining today, and the forum has been so helpful in decoding the behavior of our chickens. In particular, the tips in other posts have helped us break two broody hens. Now, we have a hen in our flock...

    What are they?

Thanks for the replies! I thought maybe they were mixed breeds. Every time I thought they looked by a certain breed, some characteristic was always off.
