Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

Yes I’ve got antibiotics for her now. This is day2 of giving them to her mixed into her drinker and as I don’t think she’s eating/drinking on her own I have been syringing from her drinker into her mouth every hour. I am nervous that so much handling (well I’m not handling her as such...just...

Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

Update. She’s still alive, and there’s been no more blood on her beak but both her eyes look very swollen now. I’ve been syringing water into her mouth every now and again. She seems to be taking a bit of it. I’ve tried giving her softened food too but I don’t think she’s having much of...

Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

She’s not looking well at all this morning, I’ve separated her off from the others as she had a lot of blood on her beak so it could be fighting. Both her eyes seem closed up now and I’m wondering if she can see at all. I e been syringing water into her mouth which she does seem keen to take...

Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

Thanks so much, I haven’t any but I’ll get some tomorrow...it’s a bank holiday here so everything’s shut this evening. It’s worth a try. We first noticed this yesterday afternoon but thought we’d see how it goes and see if she was any happier today. Thanks again for your advice. The...

Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

Thanks, the eye is just weeping tears, well it just looks v wet, but it is clear. The branches in there are just for, and they’ve been in there a while so I’d be surprised if it’s that. I put an apple in there for the first time for them to peck. But I doubt she could have an allergy to that...

Quail with sore eye, hiding away from others

Hi, One of our quail (probably about 4months old now) has a swollen eye with the feathers missing from between the beak and her eye. She's always seemed very nervous and happier to hide at the back of the hutch/coop but now she has been just sitting in the darker feed area of the coop in a...

    New quail set up

Just a bit of an update... thank you so much for all your advice and suggestions. I’ve replaced the mesh with hardware cloth and I’ve put some false shrubbery in the hutch. (It’s a 3ft Christmas tree cut down a bit that I’ve raised onto a flowerpot so they can scurry underneath and in between...

    New quail set up

Thanks FishKeeper and JurassicBawk. The wire mesh is 1/2inch x 3/4 inch but I will cover it with hardware cloth asap - I have some just need to get them into the house so I can attach it on. Thanks for the tip on the rats - I will keep a close eye on it for any chewing etc. We don't have any...

    New quail set up

Thank you so much for the quick reply FishKeeper. They don't seem to panic and run when I go near them, they do notice and peer around at me and generally scamper behind something but I assume that's pretty normal. Especially when I've been in looking for eggs - they are keen to get away but...

    New quail set up

Thanks again Fishkeeper. Yes I will look up what sort of plant might survive in the light we have there. Actually this afternoon I came home to see one of the quail very sleepy and just lying there. After moving the water close to her and going to google what I could do I returned a couple of...

    New quail set up

Hi Fishkeeper, thanks for so many suggestions! We have 6 females. Yes I haven’t seen them sitting in the pots and one of them is too small. I might leave them in there until I can get some artificial shrubbery to hang in there as they do seem to hide behind the pots a bit. I’ll put some real...

    New quail set up

Oh great- thanks for the ideas, they do seem to try to hide at the back so that’s a great idea to give something with more cover for them to hide under. I’ll try to look for some branches with leaves on for now and replace one or two of the logs. Thanks
