Hi everyone!
I just got 2 dozen SFH hatching eggs and I was told they hatch best using the dry hatching method. This is a little out of my comfort zone as my Orpington's like it to be 40% humidity for the first 18 days then bumped up to about 55 - 60% until hatch.
My question is 2 part...
Hi!
I have a set of eggs that were due to hatch on March 23rd, today is March 29th. I had 2 hatch yesterday and most of the eggs are still alive and have movement.
My main question is how long do I wait until calling it quits?
The temps have been a little weird here in Oregon and I...
I know this is going to be a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyways.
For Pour-on Ivermectin I know it's applied to the birds back between the should blades but do I apply it just like I would to a dog by running it down their backs or do I just apply the .5 CC as a blob between the...
I tried to do that but then life got in the way. We have 2 supervisors walk out of work this week so we're all picking up shifts to make sure we have someone on duty so my weekend got totally messed up. I'm not very happy about it but it rolls me in into OT and OT means more chickens. LOL
I...
Question for someone who knows more about incubating then I do!
My babies are due to hatch anytime between now and Tuesday. My question is if my babies hatch while I'm at work, will they be ok until I get home to put them in the brooder? I work 7-12 hrs a day and I have plans on making...
For the most part, I have a little green wire basket that I collect eggs in although sometimes I find a "surprise" egg after collecting them or see one in the yard from a new layer. Hoodie pockets work well as do a basket made out of your shirt, the backpacks I have for my dogs, or the feed...
- What preparations do you make before hatching/buying chicks?
I make sure that my brooder has clean shavings as well as a clean feeder and waterers. I turn on the heating pad 1-2 hrs before I pick my babies up, or the night before they're scheduled to hatch.
- Tell me about your...
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out if I have a few quitters on my hands. I finally got the courage to candle all my eggs and out of the 12, I think I have 3 that either never developed or just have blood rings.
Sorry for the pics, I had to move to my iPad halfway through and it's hard...
- Bedding in the coop: What do you use?
We use pine shavings as bedding year round but when it gets really cold (below 32*F) I'll top it with hay and straw. It adds a good insulation layer and give the girls something to scratch in if they decide not to go outside.
- How deep do...
I finally got the courage to candle 3 eggs last night and we have growth! Air cells, veins, and little embryo's are all looking good! Can't wait to see how they develop over the next 2 weeks. Everyone has given me such good advise. More updates to come!
I've found the 1 part Food Grade DE, 1 part garden soil, 1 part charcoal and 1 part sand works really well for me. We have a very hard clay based soil so I'll ad some peat moss about twice a yr to keep they're dust baths nice and loose. I haven't had any mite or lice yet so I'm hoping mt mix...
Have you found the 20% -40% humidity works for you on hatches? I'm going by most of the guidelines out there that say 45% -55% for days 1-18 then bump it up to 65% - 70% for days 19 until hatch.
How often do you candle your eggs? Most of mine are brown or olive with only a couple light tan...
Hi!
I bought an incubator last week and one of my friend gave me a dozen fertile eggs from her flocks. They've been in the bator for 72 hrs tonight at around 6pm PST. I've had a lot of trouble keeping humidity where I want it (50%) for the first 2 days.
Humidity ran between 38% and 62% for...
