    Lethargic Hen

This is the best pic I could get right now. She is just standing with her eyes closed. I gave her a dose of Corrid this morning before work just in case and she seems slightly more alert than this morning

    Raising chicks with mom

I have found that it is much easier to do chicks this way rather than a brooder set up. I’ve hatched around 50 chickens so far and letting mom do all the work has been the easiest (unless the hen is a bad mom which some are, they can be homicidal, not sit the whole duration, or abandon the...

    Lethargic Hen

I’m at work now but can post photos later. Her last egg was 2-3 days ago and she usually lays every other day. I haven’t had an egg bound chicken before, do they always penguin walk? Because once I moved her off the roost she’s walking fine. I did think sourcrop possibly but I felt her crop...

    Lethargic Hen

Hi all, One of my olive eggers (1 year old) has been lethargic the last 2-3 days, to the point where she didn’t even get off the roost today. She is presenting signs of coccidiosis (puffed feathers, lethargy, loss of appetite), I have not see blood in her stool. Everyone else in the flock...

    First Olive Egg!

They’re awesome! Aside from the cool colored eggs they have a lot of personality. A blue egger of some variety is on my list for next year!

Preparing for my first broody...what do I need to know?

There’s a lot of different methods. The article that rosemarythyme posted by aart is really helpful. The main idea is to make them uncomfortable and to cool them down. If you don’t want to put them in a broody jail then you’ll need to keep removing her from the nest and set her down where...

Preparing for my first broody...what do I need to know?

I second that. It can also be “contagious” as well. Once one starts others may follow, I just went through something similar myself where it started with 1 and I then had 5 broody at the same time. Best to break her fast if you don’t plan on letting her hatch them.

Pullets or Cockerels? Hopefully correct breeds at least!

I’m not an expert by any means but looks like a hen then. By 3 months a cockerel usually has a much larger comb (not always but usually). Some of the pictures are hard to tell, if you could get better pictures of the saddle and hackle feathers that may be helpful. For now based off of what I’m...

Pullets or Cockerels? Hopefully correct breeds at least!

How old are they? Did you get them from the pullet or straight run bin? The speckled Sussex I’m a little suspect of in the first two pictures, are pics 1-3 all the same bird? I can confidently tell you the sapphire gem is a pullet as they’re sex-linked so a cockerel would be barred.
