Lethargic Hen

Hi all,

One of my olive eggers (1 year old) has been lethargic the last 2-3 days, to the point where she didn’t even get off the roost today. She is presenting signs of coccidiosis (puffed feathers, lethargy, loss of appetite), I have not see blood in her stool. Everyone else in the flock appears to be acting normal. Should I treat with Corrid? Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

When was her last egg?

Is she should have laid an egg and hasn't, then I'd start her on Calcium Citrate+D3.
You can find Calcium Citrate with D3 in the vitamin aisle of stores like Walmart, CVS, etc. Give 1 tablet daily for a week, just pull down on her wattles, pop the tablet into the beak and let her swallow.

See that her crop is emptying.

It won't hurt to treat for Coccidiosis, it's not unheard of for older birds to have an outbreak if they are weakened by an underlying condition or illness.
Here's dosing if you decide to treat for Coccidiosis:
Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

If she's not been dewormed recently, then consider deworming or take a sample of poop to your vet for a fecal float to determine if deworming is necessary. (A fecal float can tell you if treating for Coccidiosis is necessary too).

If vet care is not an option and you feel she may benefit from deworming, you can use Valbazen or Safeguard.

To treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm - Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.

Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

Her last egg was 2-3 days ago and she usually lays every other day. I haven’t had an egg bound chicken before, do they always penguin walk? Because once I moved her off the roost she’s walking fine.

I did think sourcrop possibly but I felt her crop and it felt empty and there hasn’t been any discharge from her mouth.

She is drinking water once I got her off the roost but she was not interested in eating really.

I have not dewormed her before but I have safeguard on hand so I’ll try that.

Her tail is up. No I haven’t noticed any and I collect eggs daily

I gave her a dose of Corrid this morning before work just in case and she seems slightly more alert than this morning
