I can NOT seem to get my brooder past 85 degrees... I've had chicks before, but always used the heat lamp. Wanted to try something gentler on them. I get my chicks tomorrow. Do you think 85 will be fine for them?
I use sand for my coop floor. Under the sand is concrete, but I ABSOLUTELY Love the sand.. every morning, I use a cat litter scoop and scoop out the poop.. no more smell either. It does not get too cold or damp and with all the poop gone, no chance for ammonia to build up.

Just finished putting the tarps on the run on Saturday, and got hit with a snowstorm Saturday night..Here is southern Ontario, Canada, we don't normally get this much snow so soon. The girls appreciated the dry area today! Our coop is 8x12' and the run is 12x20...
I have an 7month old RIRxCol hen who has become broody.. I tried today to remove her from the nest box and put her with the rest of the flock (that were getting treats) and she turned and ran right back to the coop. It will be winter here in Southern Ontario soon, so I can not get her a few...
I used sand in mine..and I used a kitty litter scoop every few days to pick it up and compost. I love it and my coop is always clean. You don't need any "play" sand,.,, just the regular stuff from a landscape place. Good luck!
****.... surely didn't want that answer, but that is what I suspected! He is much more aggressive with me so far too.. I move them to an outdoor pen every day, and at night bring them back to the coop.. he puts up such a fuss!
Just wondering if anyone knows.. the bird in the first two pics has a much larger comb then the bird in the second two pics.. I got my chicks at the same time and they are now about 4 weeks. Why is the comb on JUST ONE much larger than the combs on the rest? Also, this one bird is lighter..
