dbounds, have you told the chickens they'll be dinner if they don't lay? I told my five pullets this one afternoon and the next week they each started laying. My son said that's what did it. Telling them.
I had this same experience sort of. We got our first batch of chicks at Easter from the local feed store. A friend of ours had gotten some the week before. Two weeks ago, my DH brought home all the roosters from our friend's batch as he didn't have the heart to retire them to freezer camp. I...
Great thread!
I have absolutely no problem culling the "extras". For this reason, even though I had plenty of chickens, when my RIR hen Clara went broody, I let her hatch her babies. I even hatched one that she left on the nest after all others had hatched. It's looking as if "my baby" -...

Your friend didn't go to the hospital? Is he sure it was a copperhead? My DH was bitten several years ago by a copperhead and within an hour was desperately ill. His co-workers took him (and the snake) to the hospital where he received anti-venom. His finger swelled pretty badly...
I'll be thinking about you tomorrow morning. I have a roo we'll be culling then. Sometimes you can't stop them. He got the DH, then tried me, now attacks my teenage son. The only one he hasn't gotten is my 8 yr old. Can't have that, OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
Lets see:
6 RIR hens
2 BR roos (1 has got to go!)
6 EE teenagers (2 we know are roos)
2 Delaware teens
3 BR teens (1 we know is a roo)
3 RIR teens (1 we know is a roo)
and last but not least 7 baby BR/RIR chickies. So a grand total of 29 at the moment.

Definitely. I recently put a new chick under my RIR hen who had six week old chicks. She never thought twice about it. But I did do it at night.

I don't think that's always the case. I have two adult roos and a whole bunch of chicks. My 3 months old cockerals are crowing now. And they're in sight of the bigger roos. In fact, I've let them mingle with the grown chickens.
Each morning and night we'll hear our two adult roos...

Well, stacked like cord wood, I think you'd be able to get a few thousand chickens in that much space. How tall is the building? That will make a difference, because I like to stack mine clear to the rafters!!
I love it!
