    Culling and sexing

Hello, I have been raising Coturnix quail for the past 2 yrs and enjoying it. I generally cull during spring/ summer however this year I let it get away from me and now I have too many birds. I do not like culling females and I am trying to avoid that. Last 2 sessions I sat outside the cage and...

    New Hampshire?

Yeah, the only reason I bought from TSC was because of that silky. I needed something quick to keep it company. Why a grown man gets his heart strings pulled when he sees a neglected chick I can’t explain, but I’ve done it on several occasions. I took a picture this morning of one of the hens...

    New Hampshire?

I was totally wrong. They are New Hampshire. I went to Korea for work over the past month when I returned home I have a 1/2 dozen red birds with black tipped tail feathers. Live and Learn. I am correcting myself so I don’t confuse anyone out there. Ron

    New Hampshire?

Yes, with flecks of brown/gold similar to the wing feathers.

    New Hampshire?

Amberlink. 95% sure that’s what they are. Just following up in case anyone cares. My wife went to the hatchery website that TSC buys from and they look identical to what’s on the site. From what I am reading here, mislabeled chicks are a common theme at TSC. I am not really upset about it...

    New Hampshire?

That’s what I was thinking. Pictures online of New Hampshire chicks look different. It’s not unusual for the coloring to change as they grow and New Hampshire Chickens do have white tips. Maybe I just need to wait, just wasn’t what I was expecting

I guess it would have helped if I had attached pictures...

    New Hampshire?

Purchased 1/2 dozen chicks from TSC the other day. Labeled as New Hampshire, but feathering is not looking right for that breed. Any ideas?

    Snake behavior

I had to look up Chicken Snake. It must be slang or a regional term. The term Chicken Snake can be applied to either a corn or rat snake If anyone cares...Anyway, either of those species will wrap and constrict if threatened. My best guess is it went after the chicks and Mom stepped in and the...

did my quail hen break her foot ? How can I treat her ?

Birds have very amazing healing ability. You should be able to feel a clean break with you fingers. Splints do work, if it’s bad enough I have even made slings to keep them suspendes off the ground and they use their good leg to shuffle back and forth along the supension rod for food and water...

    Huge Snake problems

Small snakes don’t stand a chance with chickens. It’s the large ones they shy away from. Usually they will make such a racket that you will hear about it long before it becomes a problem and have time to take care of it. If you don’t like handling snakes you can make a handling device using PVC...

    Huge Snake problems

I understand, I haven’t encountered any venomous snakes where I live yet, although this year has been very active. I’ve caught three rat snakes, one big guy on the road at the front of my house. I relocated it before it was run over. That is a favorite pastime for folks around here. 2 Diamond...

    Huge Snake problems

So, I am not against killing things whatsoever. Snakes though, get a free pass. They are more important than most realize and the vast majority are non-venomous. If you would prefer rats and mice then get rid of the snakes. If you prefer disease then also get rid of the snake. The best...

Royal Palm Hen laying too soon

Just an update. So my hen did decide to lay another clutch of 16 eggs. She sat and hatched out 10 poults. One was very sick and died, but the other 9 were healthy. I travel quite a bit for work, so I wasn’t around on hatch date. Luckily things went smooth, my wife set up an extra large dog crate...

Royal Palm Hen laying too soon

I candled today, nothing looks viable. She has been sitting since late Jan. Should I assume this year is a bust? What If I take the eggs? Will she snap out of it and lay again? The Tom is getting impatient that’s for sure. Ron
