Gave my sick rooster vet prescribed liquid antibiotic with a syringe for days with no problem. Yesterday I believe I accidently pushed the liquid into his lungs instead of his stomach...he was dead in seconds. I can't stop crying...
So sorry for your loss...after losing 2 of our girls to predators, we gave in and got a rooster...best decision ever! He takes excellent care of them, and they follow him around like puppies. As long as you collect their eggs, no worries about increasing flock size unless you want to.
I totally agree...they may not understand the words, but they can hear your tone and emotion. Some of my chickens will sit beside me, or on my lap, to listen and watch my face. They're much more intelligent than we give them credit for!!
Both my roos work really hard at protecting our girls, and the girls love them for it! Dogs, possums, coyotes, hawks...we've seen our roos run all these enemies away! I really hate roo discrimination!!
We have 3 hens, plus 1 large and 1 small roo. We put saddles on the girls when necessary, the large roo usually wins, but the small roo can be very sneaky! Makes for good flock observation entertainment!
We installed 2 small windows overlooking a field behind our coop. Our chickens troop right into the coop close to sunset to watch other birds flying past the windows...we call it chicken TV!
We lost 1 to a hawk...then he flew into our chicken run and wouldn't come out. It was almost dark and after 5pm the "Hawk Protection" groups won't come out to do a relocation. It took us over an hour to finally get him out.
I have food and water both in the coop and in the run. They can't go long without either of these. Our auto door didn't open one day b/c the battery died about a month earlier than we expected...
I recognized your Americaunas...I have 2 of those (Aunt Bee & Henrietta) and 2 Dominiques ( Lucy & Ethel). They're 3 weeks old, and I 'm already so attached to them!!
I purchased 4 chicks, only a day old, at a local, privately owned feed and garden center. They've been so helpful...these are my first chickens. It's amazing how fast they grow!!
I would like to address roosts...I've read that chickens prefer to have their toes stretched on a fkat surface, or...
