How many chicks do you hatch each year? How many birds are in your breeding flock?

Around how many birds do you have as breeders and how many chicks do you hatch each season? I hatch about 50 chicks for each breeding flock, but have 12 breeding flocks so it adds up a bit. I'm considering downsizing my breeders but would like to know what number everyone else's flock hovers...

Exhibition Breeding; getting rid of white on red earlobes?

I just bought a number of "exhibition Faverolles" and want to get back into breeding them. I got birds from one line but they grew out to have white earlobes, so I sold them and bought others from a different line. Turns out they have white on the earlobes too... I really don't want to get rid...

How can I maximize my bantams laying abilities?

Layer or Breeder will work as long as it isn't scratch (plain mixed grains). I've had the most success with mash or pellets but some scratch can work if it's mixed with pellets or the grains have been powdered with minerals/vitamins. You can read the back of the bag as the amount of...

    Orpington Thread!!!

Out of all my Orpingtons I'd have to say Crele and Cuckoo are my favourites. Crele isn't recognised but Cuckoo is (where I am). I find any Cuckoo related colour in this breed to be a somewhat better layer, especially through Winter. Cuckoo Orpington Ccokerel: Blue Gold Crele Cockerel - a bit...

Help! i’m new and can’t tell my hens from my Roos.

When you're looking for pointy feathers you'll see almost triangular ones on the males as seen in the saddle of this bird (former to his tail). They are usually longer than a pullet/hen's feathers too, often covering the wingtips.

Help! i’m new and can’t tell my hens from my Roos.

Welcome to BYC :) They're all pullets - No. 8 has a more vibrant comb however it is small relative to a cockerel and cockerels develop pointed sickles, saddles and hackles at 12 - 13 weeks, I can't see any development.

How can I maximize my bantams laying abilities?

As long as they are getting enough calcium, 12 - 14 hrs of sunlight each day and at least 15% protein in their mash they should be laying at their best. Also take their age into consideration; they gradually start to lay less as they get older. Other than that there isn't much you can do to...

    Using Wing bands for ID

Hello everyone, In my time breeding I've always used leg tags to keep track of lineage and splits etc however this season I am looking into using wing bands instead. I'll be putting them on chicks however I have a few queries that I can't seem to find the answers to elsewhere: 1. Can wing...

    Black Astralorp stopped laying

Can you post an image of her? Many so called Australorps are black commercial Hybrids that stop laying at 2 to 3 years of age. Otherwise she could have started molting already and has stopped laying as replacing all of her feathers and laying would put too much strain on them.

    What color is this silkie?

They're both white. The difference is that the greyish one is Silver based, the other is gold based or possibly Cream, but most likely gold. They will grow out to look alike only that Silver Whites tend to be 'cleaner'. Less leakage, if there is any.

    What breed?

Black one is most likely a black Pekin (bantam Cochin) if it is small like a bantam. Red one could be a Rhode Island Red hence the yellow legs.

    What kind of chicks?

They're still quite young. The brown ones could be a variety of things (please post images of them when their feathers come through). Second chick (which is most likely a male by the way) could be a Cuckoo Orpington or a Plymouth - if he gets yellow legs he's a plymouth. Typically BSL get a bit...

Guesses as to what gender we are?

#5 is a Cockerel. Closer image of the comb would be good to confirm but judging from that image he's definitely looking very cockerel-like. All the others are pullets.

Ended Contest #8 Poultry Silhouette Photo Contest - 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

This is one of my Platinum Sussex pullets who refuses to sleep in the pen, instead she sleeps on the roof. When I go down to the chook pen in the morning her silhouette stands out against the sun.

Sexing your Silkies (PICTURES AND TIPS - Updated July-5-12)

Looks like a pullet to me, comb is very small and the crest isn't as sleek as a males. Not so sure on colour but the last silkies I had that looked like that were Blue Buff, otherwise she could be Isabel Porcelain, although porcelains usually have darker crests but colouring varies from bird to...
