I am thinking about starting one. I will keep it on a screened porch. When the temps get low, can I add a heat lamp? Would that work to keep them warm? They like warmth, correct? I will be using a 60 gallon tank with a screen top. That should work, correct?

    Help! What are we?

Thanks everyone! I guess they are Russian Orloffs! I don’t think their beards are being plucked by the other hens because they have never had beards. I have had them since they were a day old and they have never had them. I also have never seen any of the other girls mess with them. They are at...

    Help! What are we?

When I got them as day old chicks, I was told they were Russian Orloffs but once they grew up, the didn’t look like Russian Orloffs.

    Freeloaders not laying eggs

Our days are a little shorter. Some of them have never laid and I am wanting them to pull their weight :D

    Freeloaders not laying eggs

I know they aren't laying outside because they only have access to their coop and run unless I let them out to free range when I am with them. I will try adding some supplemental light and see if that helps. Thanks!

    Freeloaders not laying eggs

I have 12 hens, all of egg laying age, and only 2 of them are providing eggs. One of them is molting so I know she won't lay but the other 9 should be laying, at least every now and then....but nothing! The are on good food with plenty of calcium, they are drinking and eating well, they don't...

    Breed of these pretty girls?

I’ve got one more for you. I was told this one and her sister were ameraucanas but they don’t have the puffy cheeks like my ameraucana hen does. Any idea what breed she is?

    Breed of these pretty girls?

Thank you everyone! After checking out some pictures of Easter eggers and dark brahams, I think you are all correct! So excited to finally know what they are! I have one more for you...here is a picture of another girl. I think she is also an Easter egger but I am curious about the brown on her...

    Breed of these pretty girls?

Anyone know what breed these two beauties are in the foreground of this picture? They are about 17 weeks old. When we went to pick out our new chicks, the kids were walking around telling the lady which ones they wanted and I didn’t write down what they were. Any ideas?

    Need help identifying my girl.

I think the White Faced Black Spanish bantam might be the winner. We have some new small white eggs that are new but we didn’t know if those were hers since we have some young silkies and there was also a new smaller brown one in there too.

    Need help identifying my girl.

Both of those are possible but they both seem to have much, much larger combs and wattles than my girl. Maybe just because she is so small.
