Unfortunately she was in really bad shape this morning and we had to take her to the vet to put her down. But thank you all for the suggestions, I'll keep that in mind for next time.
She didn't seem interested in mealworms or yogurt, which they usually get excited about. I've been setting out a dish of layer pellets with water in it so it's more of a mash, which she ate at first but stopped recently. I haven't tried adding anything to the water, though. How would you add...
I have one chicken remaining from when I first started keeping hens in 2011. She was doing surprisingly well, but she's had a rough couple of weeks. First she got wounded when my over-energetic rooster mounted her and gashed her sides, and then I discovered that she had poultry lice. I've been...

I posted a few days ago about gauze stuck to my hen's wound, and I was able to get it off, but now we're dealing with another crisis... poultry lice! I think that's what they are, anyway. I didn't notice anything yesterday, but when I cleaned out her wound today, I noticed some flat, tan insects...
I'm sorry! That sounds stressful. I had a similar issue with one of my hens several months ago-- something went wrong internally (possibly a liver problem) and her abdomen filled up with fluid. The vet was able to drain it with a syringe, but it wasn't curable (and antibiotics had no effect)...
Interesting. It wasn't sticky gauze, so there isn't any glue, but maybe the vaseline will help soften the blood/skin that the gauze is stuck to. I'll try that, thanks!
One of my hens was recently injured by one of my roosters (his nails gashed her sides when he mounted her), and I cleaned it out and covered it with gauze and a wrap. Today, when I tried to remove the gauze from the wound, it was stuck. I'll use non-stick gauze next time, but any tips for...
