Your experiences with Geese adjusting without their mates

I am wondering how easy or difficult the adjustment may be for geese to be sold, or temporarily moved to another location without their mates. I do know if they are on the same property and are aware of each other that bonded pairs won't be happy, but what about when a goose or gander moves to...

    Magpie Ducks

I notice my Magpie hen does the same thing, she's three. She'll take a break, sometimes up to five days, and then resume laying. They're not as good of egg layers as my Welsh Harlequins, but I enjoy thier calmer personality. If you just got her I wonder if the stress of changing homes caused...

    Pictures of Splash Female Geese

Knobs, tufts, pied/splash, that's quite a bouquet of genes you've hatched there!!!

    Pictures of Splash Female Geese

That shows you how much I know, I would have thought the Chinese and the Romans were different species and couldn't produce offspring with each other. Also I don't even know what a Pied looks like, is that the same as Saddleback, or is that another word for Splash? I have read that there are...

    Pictures of Splash Female Geese

Thanks for jumping in 8Geese! I only have Sebastopols but I was thinking the rules of goose genetics would apply to all geese, actually now that I think about it maybe to only those derived from the Greylag. I know the feathering on the Sebbies can make the colors appear a little different...

    Pictures of Splash Female Geese

I'm pretty new when it comes to geese and have so much to learn. In the past two years I've hatched out splashes from completely different parents and I am beginning to suspect that all splashes are male. Color genetics in geese are so complex, and the ability to identify even what color a...

Suspect blocked esophagus in gosling- How to treat?

These are six week old goslings. Started them on different feed today, more like a ground product than a crumble. They had been eating a little whole wheat in water and also a little starter crumbles up to now. but mostly forage for the past few weeks. They do have access to grit. I let them...

I have a Sebastopol that I believe is a gander about two months old that needs a new home. He loved to do the same thing, although since he has been living outside for the past week and a half he seems a little more aloof. If Terry doesn't find what he needs at the Brighton event he should PM...

LOL!!! People who think ducks are dumb just don't know them very well. P-Funk I agree that placement next to the fence helps lessen the mud making in the pen. Great if its on a slope. I like to put those big rubber waterers on a pallet so the water that spills around it isn't so easy for...

I don't have a pond either, I use kiddie pools and plastic bins and a large rubber waterer. Ponds can be hard to keep clean if you have too many ducks. I have hoses set up to help me syphon and drain the pools in the summer and use smaller containers I can bail out when the hoses are frozen...

Oh yes I am a duck lover! That"s why I have so many! And keep hatching MORE!! I like the smaller breeds so I can fit more in! I can't expand into the larger ones until I get a larger property and larger income to feed them all. Hope you can find those babies a nice home.

Hello! I don't think I've posted for aver a year, I get so busy with hatching this time of year and then all the little brooder peeps need so much attention. Goes on for months and I love it but it takes so much time and energy. I've been hatching ducks for a few years now and selling them...

Welsh Harlequin Breeding Thread - People who are breeding or want to breed their WH's talk

Regarding the inheritance question, it's true that the gold vs silver phase will be determined by what gene comes from the father. I can't use all the correct terminology but I'll try to explain what I know. On the segment of the genes that code for silver or gold, the male inherits from both...

    cleaning and selling duck eggs?

I'm wondering if you could improve the dirtyness of the eggs by training your ducks to use a nest if you haven't already. My ducks' eggs usually come out of their nests looking pretty clean, after just a little washing they look fine for selling.
